Pre-med without AP Chem or AP Physics?

Ditto all the advice above and want to add that if you do decide to take a chemistry class at the CC before you start college, any grade you earn in that class must be reported both to your college and on your AMCAS application (for medical school). AMCAS will include the grade in both your overall GPA and your sGPA. Not reporting the grade will get your application rejected for falsification of information.

If you are worried about colleges not accepting you based on what you did in high school, you can always apply with major as “UNDECIDED”.

My sister never took AP physics or AP chem at our public high school. She is a rising pre med junior at Indiana with a 3.97 GPA. Not taking AP classes is not a big deal.

My D took all the science and math APs and received credit but it didn’t matter since some med schools still wanted her to take their required classes during college. The AP advantage is not that significant.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am going to take it if my counselor would do it. People tell me its fine but my dad thinks that I would have a much easier time in college if I took the class since most of the required classes are chemistry. My brother is a math/science person, took AP Chem in high school, and had to retake Chem in college for an A so it would probably be even harder for me without it…

There is no requirement for any APs for pre-med. there is no pre-med major either. You choose whatever major and then apply to Med. School. It is your personal decision to do so.

" Chem in college for an A so it would probably be even harder for me without it."
NO, it would not. D. never had an AP Chem, her HS did not offer AP Chem. She was hand picked for an SI position by Gen Chem prof. after she ended up having over 100% (with extra credit) on every single test and many lined up after class to ask her questions (which triggered the offer from prof.). D. ended up teaching many who had AP Chem. She recieved a leadership medal at graduation for her SI work and was told many times that she actually raised the grades in this class.
Do whatever you thing is the best for you. But there is no requirement for any AP. Gen. Chem has been the easiest science class for my D. in UG, she did not need to prep. Gen Chem for an MCAT (because of her work as an SI) and continue to be her strongest area in Med. School. All without an AP Chem.

Just out of curiosity, is she at the University of Miami? Your daughter is seems really intelligent. My brother is going there and he is definitely smarter than me so that makes me think I would probably struggle in the class (even moreso with AP Chem). With what I learnt in 10th grade Honors Chem, I think I would certainly be behind in a Gen Chem class…

You can definitely gain admission without AP Chem. D was admitted to University of Florida for fall 2013 and never took AP Chem or AP Physics. Her guidance counselor advised against it. She advised that UF might prefer you taking their Chem. D is also thinking of med school. She applied to UF as an undecided major. She just plans to take the courses required for med school admission.

I see. I wish my dad would actually listen to this but he’s realllly stubborn…

“Just out of curiosity, is she at the University of Miami?”
-3rd year Medical Student, not at U of Miami, not even close, we are in Midwest.
Again, stop worrying, take whatever seems appropriate and whatever your schedule allow you to take, and again, APs are not required. However, be prepared to work much harder in college, APs or not, an adjustment to higher requirements/standards is what sets apart a good college student.

I would think not. My son is a MCDB (Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology) major and “pre-med” who attends a top private university and all he had was AP Bio and AP Calculus AB. It didn’t stop him from getting in a school with single digit acceptance rates so it shouldn’t hurt your chances either.
