My frosh d was going to do pre orientation FIT and I was wondering about the logistics and the value of going down both times. We are from the MW . We are kind of closer to the 'involved parent' but money and scheduling might be a challenge. So out of curousity how many (about what proportion) of parents who do pre orientation also come to the Wednesday Matriculation Ceremony / official BA BYE?

Would my d be in the extreme minority where all the rest of the kids would have their parents at the teary eyed Matriculation ceremony?

I’d send her to pre-o on her own bc it’s essentially like going away for a summer program. They don’t need to take much with them for that. (The last 2 years, my S did summer programs to which he travelled by plane back & forth on his own, & had to bring his bedding & towels.) Then I’d go up for orientation bc that will probably be more memorable for all of you.

Follow up question - piggybacking. For those that do a pre-orientation program allowing the student to stay in the dorm for the 4 days, did you move everything in for pre-orientation (he is doing FIT)? or wait until the official move-in day?

If you can avoid moving in at the same time as the majority of the students, then by all means do. Not that it’s horrible or anything - our experience with it was fine - but why subject yourselves to chaos and confusion that you can avoid?

My child didn’t do pre-orientation, but I’d tend to agree that attending matriculation would be the more memorable of the two. Assuming that’s feasible, of course.

Does anyone know if a kid can move all his stuff into his dorm room if he’s doing a pre-o program that’s off campus (Focus)?
