pre-orientation programs and orientation

Is Quest the only pre-orientation trip available?

The packet called "starting out" says there will be options sent in mid June.

Can any current students remember what they were? When do the kids go ?

8/31 is check in day. Websites says there will be presidents welcome in aft then matriculation ceremony on Fri night. Do families go to both or only presidents welcome?

What do kids do on weekend and Mon for orientation? Then classes begin Tues, correct?

Can anyone tell me what the first week after check in is like during orientation and kind of what to expect? Can you try to talk w/ professors to get into a class ( drop/add) that orientation week or do you have to wait till classes begin?

Also, pre-orientation....Quest is not for my D ( not the wilderness type) but what else is there?

Thanks

My daughter did a 4 day artist program where she met the art professors at Trinity and toured art galleries and museams in Hartford. Another activity was a Habitat for Humanity project and another was a bicycle trip. Was worth it just to get her into her dorm early. As parent, attend matriculation ceremony and then leave. My daughter did not have much luck in changing classes from the ones she received in June; but perhaps she just wasn't aggressive enough. She has had a terrific first year and is very happy with her selection of Trinity.

Oh wow...my D would love it if they did another art program during the orientation! That is one of the classes she wants to get into that is closed already. But maybe she'd like something different too, the bike trip sounds good.

Do many parents hang around the first day or even into next day? She is our first one off to college, don't know the customs yet. We have 3 right behind her so by the fourth child we'll be pros but we are newbies with this daughter.

She was thinking we should go up w/ her the day before check in to shop for dorm needs( blanket, towels, rug etc.) but we didn't know if the pre-orientation is the few days before that and how the schedules all worked and if parents stay or not. Do you remember if pre-orientation was right before check in day and how many days it was? I know Quest Adventure is 18 days and comes back on the 28th I think. What about the other programs? Was the art program you talked about part of orientation or a pre-orientation?

Did you shop for everything before hand and bring it all w/ you on check in day or shop a little at a time after she was there? Jt voyager (of this forum, a current student) told me there is a Walmart a mile from school. Also the lobby in Mather has vendors come and sell their wares the first week. what did your daughter do to set up her room? Shop before and bring everything or add things a bit at a time afterwards? I guess it depends too if she gets a single or double( She is in Jones hall) if she should buy refrig and microwave and share costs w/ roomate or alone.

Just trying to think ahead... I'm sure there will be alot of adjusting to do that week and the first semester for that matter as well. Just trying to get an idea of timetables and when to do what and what she will need that first week. Sorry for all the questions...lol.

How did your D like her first year?

Thanks again

Trinity offerred an number of 4 day pre-orientation programs, one of which was the art program. She received the information in June but did not find out until almost August which program she was accepted for. You can give them a number of choices in order of priority. Our son went to Washington University in St. Louis and they had an extensive orientation program for parents that l;asted 2 1/2 days. Trinity has nothing like that. We are from Michigan and brought what we could. However, there was great shopping (including a Target and a large shopping mall only 3 or so miles from campus) nearby (in West Hartford). By the way, West Hartford is absolutely charming for shopping. We had difficulty finding a refrigerator because with so many other colleges in CT, everyone swarms through these stores pretty quickly. My daughter loved her first year and has greatly matured with her first year away from home. She has made a lot of new friends. Learned to participate more in class and established good relationships with her professors. She has decided to major in art and has really loved her art classes.

"she knows she is in Jones"...How does your daughter know that? I am newly accepted also and I have no idea where I will be. I called them and asked and they said nothing was decided yet. Even though I am in GStud, Trinity told me that nothing is done until June Days. I feel that I am way behind because I don't know any of this stuff.

We had a meeting w/ the director of Guided Studies, Asst Dean Ronald Spencer. He confirmed that all the guided studies kids are housed in Jones Hall. So it looks like you and my d will be together there! They are mixed w/ inter-arts program kids and maybe a few from other first year seminars, but all kids will be freshman together. It is made up of singles and doubles( small rms w/tiny wardrobes, deskand bed ea. Our guide said she lived there freshman yr and loved it, a fun hall because she said the guid stud students form close bonds.

Have you seen it yet?

I have to say it was not so hot but not terrible I guess. Cinderblock walls and the bsmt "lounge" was a little musty and smelly but had a huge TV and comfy couches! And a little kitchen area w/ a few pool tables.

The tour guide told us that Jones is rated a "C" ( Ratings are D as worst through A+ as mint) She said Jones is a"C" mostly because it is located next door to Mather Hall and is convenient. Not because of the way it looks. If Jones was further from the diningroom and social hub it would be a "D". the guide is now a soph and lives in Summit Suites North. She says it is rated A+ and IS beautiful and new but misses Jones because she had so much fun even tho it was not as pretty.

If you took the tour then you have seen Jones Hall already. It is the one they show you as the "mock dorm room".

Hey Good luck next yr!

BTW my D talks to Trinity kids on live journal.......maybe you want to check it out.

Here is the link

http://community.livejournal.com/trinitycollege/

Ok, June. It's good to know she will get something about it then Thanks, she thought maybe QUEST was the only option and felt left out, but then we saw something on the website saying there will be options. Thanks for filling us in.

I'm glad your D had a good first year. Trinity looks like it will be a good experience for my D too. I hope...( smile) She is my first goin off to college( could ya tell w/ all my silly questions..)

Thanks for the tip about west hartford. We will check it out.

My D loves art too, she plans on a studio art minor and major in...does not know yet... Do you or anyone out there know about FOCUS ( The photography Club?) That is her passion.

My daughter has chosen studio arts as her major. Her advisor has already sat down with her and laid out most of her classes until her senior year. Being able to have a close relationship with the advisor is an advantage at a small school like Trinity. Again, you are going to lioke West Hartford and its only 10 minutes away. Your daughter can get there with public transportation and on weekends, the school runs a shuttle.

luliztee...didn't ur daughter get the trinity email address??
most of us have already joined facebook..

we are getting less CC addictive and more facebook addictive!

I don't know, she did not mention it to me. I know she set up her Trinity e-mail about 2 wks ago. What's the facebook?

I simply CANNOT believe you or your daughter haven't heard of facebook yet!

It's a discussion community, just like collegeconfidential and myspace.
The only thing that makes it different is that it is meant for college students. Nowadays, even high school students and ppl. from a company can register and form their own networks.
The thing that makes it safer than sites such as myspace, is the fact that only a student of a particular college can register for a particular network. Others can join too but only with permission. So, to be registered in the Trinity network, your D must have a Trinity email ID, which is proof that she is a student of Trinity.
I've met many ppl. such as, my very old frens who are in some other colleges in USA, Trinity frens of my batch whom I haven't even met yet, seniors, etc. through this website.
I don't know much of it coz I'm new to it myself and just discovering.

Go, tell your D to try it out already! http://www.facebook.com
WARNING: Facebook is addictive. Use at your own risk!

Ok take it easy...lol. Since I am not a student I was not aware of facebook.
pardon me for being uninformed...lol.

I asked my d about it. She said yeah, she knows about it and she has been using it ever since she signed up for her Trinity e-mail. So maybe you have been talking to her already and did not even know it!

She is entitled to her private discussions and so am I but then we will exchange info about what we learned about Trinity. Afterall, I'm sure you don't tell your mom EVERYTHING. I only knew she mentioned the live journal that I posted the link to previously.

I think it's great that there are these sites for new students to exchange info and get acquainted.

Thanks for letting me know about facebook, I leave that one alone since it's for college kids and she should have her privacy to talk about whatever she wants w/ whomever she wants w/o me sharing the site too. I would not cross a line of privacy.

That's great you are meeting people and learning about Trinity. Godd luck ntek 511!

Unless something has changed Trinity does not run a shuttle to West Hartford center or anywhere off campus and has not for several years. The shuttles were discontinued due to lack of use. Public transit it Hartford is do-able but a bit of a nightmare.

Sorry for the eror on the shuttle. My daughter confirms that she takes bus to west hartford if she can't get anyone to drive her.
