Pre-orientation

which trips are the best? i think i want to do something on the water (sea kayaking or white water rafting) but i have no experience… would i be okay?
also what does the outing club entail… i know you have to pay $45 to sign up so what does being a member mean? thanks.

also.. when do we get our bowdoin emails and roommate/housing questionaire in the mail??

check out http://www.bowdoin.edu/orientation/

And then look again on Tuesday May 9

There should be some new information rolling out aroundish then.

In terms of pre-o, no need of experience.

being a member just means you can take trips with the outing club. there are usually 3-5 trips per weekend--hiking, canoeing, kayaking, biking, etc, etc. You go to the OLC to sign up for a trip and then you go. The trips are pretty fun, and if you plan on going (they're also a cool way to meet people) it's worth it to join. I'm a (lazy) member--I haven't been on many trips, but the ones I have been on have been a good time.
As far as pre-o trips go, I think most of them say that no experience is necessary. They're all fun. The fun'll come mostly in hanging out with the people you just met while you're kayaking/sailing/canoeing/hiking, not the other way around.

cool-- if i'm going to be on a sports team at bowdoin is there any use in joining the outing club because i probably won't have much free time to go on trips during the weekends--i'll either have practice or matches.

Here's a link with info about all of the trips... http://www.bowdoin.edu/outing/preorientation/

I dunno--how many teams are you on? There are trips all year. I personally chose not to go on winter trips, but they have them. Soooo, unless you're in season all year, you must have SOME free time. Up to you.

I know plenty of people involved with the outing club who do sports. And absolutely no experience is necessary for the pre-o trips. You will learn what you need to know before you go out on the water.

Seriously, I cannot emphasize this enough, the Outing Club is one of the best deals on campus. For $40 in dues, you can take any trip (of which there are at least 3 a week), rent any equipment, take any class, go to any of their events. Its ridiculous. If you were to rent practically any one piece of equipment from the outing club, or with the price of gas, take any trip, you would get your moneys worth.

yea they are great if you want to wake up at 5 am saturday morning and return home the next day exhausted. 50 dollars to go on at most 2 trips a year is def not worth it. most people who shell out the 50 dont even go on trips.

Wow! Aren't you positive today?

indeed he is!

don't worry sling - you can apply to come here as a transfer if the first round of admissions didn't pan out for you.
