Pre-Professional Medical Program? What are my chances?

So I do realize that I am “just a sophomore”, but it’s already almost second semester and I want to ask what my chances would be assuming I keep the activities/grades I currently have. I am an aspiring biochemistry major/English lit minor interested in pre-professional med programs such as those present at Case, Rice, Brown, or Northwestern. I’m very much scientifically oriented and am hugely invested in anything medical I can get my little hands on haha, so Brown’s program might not be optimal because I’ve heard it’s geared towards liberal artsy stuff as well; however, I would still be open to applying, as I have a strong interest in English and the musical arts.

  1. Thus far, have a 4.0 unweighted freshman and sophomore year. Hopefully, it stays this way.
  2. Have taken 4 AP's, including calc ab and bc, (if you count the ones this year) and plan on taking 5 AP/IB classes junior year in addition to calc 3 at a local uni
  3. Joint paid internship at an engineering lab/local startup company with past publications and upcoming papers that have been submitted/are in the process of being written
  4. Competitive piano performer and co-chair of an outreach program that hosts recitals for elderly/children in the area
  5. President of a fundraising organization for CCHD's in babies and children (this is something I just came up with and am currently working on with peers, physicians, and entrepreneurs to get off the ground)
  6. Some experience shadowing physicians that I anticipate building up over the summer (breaks are usually very busy)
  7. Regular member of entrepreneurship/investment club at my school who leads the discussions of healthcare management (this is my favorite side hustle :))
  8. White, female, first gen (Part Middle Eastern, I doubt this helps)

Thank you! At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter to me if I get accepted into any of these programs or not. I’m very passionate about medicine and will find a way to make it work and do what I want with my life. However, Rice is a dream school of mine and I’d like to have the assurance of basically getting into my desired career guaranteed.

It’s a bit early to really say anything, although you seem to be on the right track. BS/MD programs are notoriously competitive and there have been plenty of incidents where applicants get into Princeton, Harvard or some tippy top school yet get no love from these programs, so really consider applying as a biochem major to other schools as a normal freshman and be pre-med. I don’t know if BS/MDs will default you to normal undergrad admission if you’re rejected, but if they do then you still have a chance of being accepted as a normal biochem major.

In that case, they’re still great schools to attend.

Thank you! I know it’s basically a crapshoot. no matter what, I’ll get to where I need to be.
