Hi. New to the forum, but have been reading posts for weeks and have gotten so much great info and advice here.

My D is a high school senior and top State ranked oboe player. We are in the process of filling out the common app, and the art suppliment requires either a link to a website with a sample performance, or that we mail a CD/DVD.

She was just in contact with a former classmate who is currently at a top conservatory for oboe. She said there is no need of a pre sreening CD for oboe, that two years ago she did not send one with her applications.

Is this correct? D is in the process of practicing with an accompanist and I am looking for recording equipment and a space to record in.

Do I contact each school she is applying to and ask if they require this, or submit without it? This is the only thing holding up her applications. Is the pre-screening a new requirement?

Requirements vary at each school, and should be available on each school’s website. Unfortunately, there isn’t necessarily uniformity there. You should look ASAP, because the pre-screens are often very specific (with either specific songs required or specific types) and also usually have very early deadlines.

I recommend starting a chart with columns titled Name of School, Teachers, Audition Rep, Prescreen Required?, (if so, Prescreen Rep), Application Due Date, Prescreen Due Date, Audition Days, Cost, etc.

Things do change, and a school that didn’t require a prescreen two years ago might well have added the requirement. If it’s not mentioned anywhere on the “Applications” or “Prospective Students” sections, there’s probably no prescreen.

When my D was applying 2 years ago, most schools told her NOT to complete the Arts Supplement for the Common App. They all had their own prescreening requirements that were completely separate. She was told that the arts supplement was usually used by kids who were non-music majors who wanted to be considered for scholarships and/or admission into ensembles. But, as a voice major, she definitely had to submit prescreens for several schools.

Thanks for all the advice. Just made a chart to use to keep all the differnt schools straight and will check what each college asks for. The common app is general, so it’s possible that she doesn’t need to submit a prescreening for most of her schools. Not all of her colleges take the common app.

She just practiced earlier with her accompanist and is ready to record. Thanks for the recommendation on recording equipment. We are waing to hear back from her high school music director to see if we can borrow the auditorium to record in.

She is applying to both conservatories and colleges with excellent music programs. She hopes to double major in music performance and music ed.

Can I jump into this thread and ask where is the online arts supplement for the Common App, or does it only exist in pdf format? We have looked all over and can’t find it!

We had Rochester down on the common app, but then removed it, because she is only applying to degrees thru Eastman. (An admission advisor at a college fair told us if she wanted a dual major in music performance/education she had to apply to Rochester also–he was wrong since both those degrees are thru Eastman–maybe he didn’t realize she was wanted music ed.)

As soon as we took Rochester off the list on the common app, the Arts Suppliment disappeared, even though before this it showed up on every other college. I do recall it popped up as soon as we added Rochester. So it’s possible none of the schools on your list are requiring an Arts Suppliment and that’s why you can’t find the box.

Thanks, Parkmama. I loiter on this board because I have a D in music conservatory; my 12th grader is in the process of applying to theater arts conservatories and LACs, and she has seen no arts supplements anywhere in her applications. Maybe the colleges don’t require it? I wish they did!

It is my understanding that if a college/university uses the common app art supplement then when you do the common app for that school the availability of the common app art supp appears. This would not likely be the case for a conservatory in any case (or I would doubt it). Most conservatories or music schools would require an audition and sometimes a pre-screen cd or dvd (you need to check the websites). However, even if a college (for example a LAC) does not use the common app art supplement, that does not mean that they don’t accept art supplements. If you read the info on many college websites you can find that they do accept and consider art supplements in connection to admission, but you do not use the common app art supp form. Some have their own forms (i.e. if I remember correctly Pomona), and some don’t reference any form at all. Some give specifics as to what media should be used (cd, dvd, online, etc) and/or what should be included (in my D’s case that would be what style of song for voice and what style/presentation for dance). Even others say they accept art supps but give no guidelines whatsoever.

So the long and the short of it is that art supps are never required but often accepted and you really have to read all the material to figure out who accepts what. Conservatories/music schools may or may not need a pre-screening cd or dvd, but you need to check with each school to find that out.

It’s complicated if your D is applying to a variety of types of schools and you want to do an art supp.
