As we start the app process, it appears SUNY Purchase requires a pre-screening CD for all instruments and voice. Was that a recent change? I don't remember seeing the pre-screening requirement before now.

I don't recall it being across all instruments in prior years, but I could be wrong. I thought jazz, violin, flute were precreened in prior years, not all. Not sure about voice.

That's what I thought, too (pre-screening for some not all). I'll ask admissions.

Voice was definitely a pre-screen this past year.

They require pre-screening along with the $54 audition fee which is something I find outrageous. None of the other schools on my D's list even have an audition fee, let alone charging it to listen to a pre-screen. We will look at the place and, if she likes it, we'll pay it, but I'll be gritting my teeth as I write the check.

Be thankful that she did not apply to Curtis where there is a $150 audition fee (whether or not an accompanist is provided) in addition to the $150 application fee.

Well, I see your point BassDad but, good as it may be, Purchase ain't exactly Curtis, either.

Just pointing out that Purchase is not unique in charging an audition fee. In part, I think Curtis has the high fees to keep the number of applicants down to a level that they can handle.

The Pre-screening CD for all instruments IS a new addition to this year's application. But it may depend on the instrument. My D plays bassoon and she does not have to submit a CD.
