Pre-Screening Results 2008-2009

Music4us, I know that there are a couple of piano majors here who have heard from Eastman, and personally know of several voice majors who have gotten their e-mails. Given that, I would think that you'd be fine calling them or sending an e-mail on Monday. Your son has been contacted by first-rate schools, so it's possible that his Eastman stuff might have been mislaid or that they just haven't gotten to his "date" yet. Good luck!

I ended up passing prescreening at Oberlin, NYU, Eastman and NEC for jazz bass

Thank you Mezzo'sMama. I'll definitely call Eastman on Monday. From reading these postings, I'm learning about some strange things happening, such as kids getting auditions at some top rate schools but not others. Hopefully, we haven't heard from Eastman yet because we did request that later date of February 27th. There's a teacher at Eastman, Thomas Schumacher, that my son would like to get.

congrats, dhalp!!! Those are four fine schools! When did you hear from Eastman?

I guess its about time, I posted this, though I feel l'm the only one posting about my sons auditions for his MM in vocal performance. He is auditioning this coming week at CCM, and in Cleveland for Aspen. He's also got auditions coming up this month and February at MSM, Shepherds School of Music at Rice, NEC, Curtis, Indiana, Jacobs School of Music, and I think I'm forgetting one. Its amazing how I'm not in the loop nearly as much as I was when he was applying to undergrad school:) He's learned alot during his 4 yrs..and has a clear idea of what he needs from a program, starting with teachers he's interested in studying with.

Anyway, its exciting. I think any of the schools he applied to would be great.

Music4Us- definitely call and check (if they are not there on Monday, remember that it is a holiday and try first thing Tuesday morning!), because my D had her audition at CIM today and talked to another young man-VP major- who has also heard from Eastman; the thing is that both of them requested the 2/20 date and neither has heard if they received the first choice slot. I can tell you that Rochester has had some terrible weather over the past week so I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that some people couldn't get into the city for work!

DS had Feb 6th as his first choice date. He did not hear right after the audition acceptance, and also was left hanging for a while. I finally got him to email the school, and he got confirmation shortly after that. I definitely suggest you contact them by email or phone.

Hi all, I called Eastman this morning, and the admissions lady really sounded frazzled. She did say, however, that the prescreening results emails for those dates that were applicable to my son (piano) of Feb. 13th or Feb. 27th would be sent out by the end of this week. I'm glad there's not a problem, just that they're a little slow there.

My daughter got an e-mail tonight that she is invited for an undergraduate vocal audition on Feb.6th. Anyone know how many people are typically invited for auditions and then ultimately accepted? She is a soprano. Thanks for any insights you have.

GVMom- we've actually touched on what you ask earlier in this thread, so you might want to check it out, but there are always more females than males for VP. That being said, this year seems to have brought out more guys than usual, in fact, my D commented that at her audition this past weekend, there ratio seemed to be about 2/3 female to 1/3 male. It all comes down to what the school needs and what individual teachers need for their studios. If a school does produce undergraduate operas, they are often chosen years in advance and that gives them a chance to fill their program accordingly. Teachers who sit on the audition panels can use the session to hand-pick students whom they think would fit with their teaching style or who could bring something unique to their studio. With sopranos, voice type within that fach can be a factor; coloraturas can be identified easier and soubrettes, with their smaller voice, show up, but those spintos and dramatic sopranos rarely develop the weight that identifies them at this young age so selection process has to weigh all of that too.
If you go to some of the conservatory web sites and really dig around, you may see a list of the "typical" number of students majoring in each instrument (and voice), the typical number of openings each year and the number of first year students admitted in total- you do the math!

Well, it was a good pre-screen day around here. Son was invited to audition at Eastman, New School and got all his Peabody audition info in the mail. Now we're just waiting from one more - have the published date for his instrument, just not the acceptance for audition. If that's a yes, it's going to be a whirlwind 10 days in February.

About Peabody--they seem incredibly organized! Anyone have hotel suggestions for them?

Peabody has an inn connected to it that's usually an Elderhostel but they open it up for auditioning students. It is very spartan but it worked for us, and i loved the old photos on the walls. If you're interested, the info may be in your audition packet or just call the admissions office. I'd call asap.

Congrats to your S, SJ! Fantastic news! We stayed down by the waterfront area when we visited Peabody, which was fun because it was late spring, and there was a lot going on (a fantastic group of steel drummers playing outside, for example!). It is too far to walk to Peabody from there, so for auditions, I would try to stay closer to the school.

The close inns and hotels are snapped up pretty quickly. If you have not called for the one at Peabody yet it may be gone. We calle d the same day we received the package and it was gone.

We stayed at the Mt Vernon hotel from their list on the web site Peabody Institute - Student Affairs: Hotels and Inns Near the Peabody Institute. It was a pretty basic hotel but had a small breakfast included. It really was not easy to walk even though it says it is 2.5 blocks since the weather was bad and we had to check out anyhow. We drove over. She had to be there all day anyhow. Be aware also that parking is difficult but sometimes you can get into the garage even when it says it is full if you are there for auditions. . .

The latest from the Eastman Admissions Office is that they are indeed going in "chronological order of requested audition date" and "hope to have everyone notified within the week". The woman was very nice, but sounded like she had just run a mile backwards- harried beyond belief. I really felt sorry for her. We all think that we are glad when this process is over, but I have a feeling that the employees of admissions offices head for Club Med in droves!

We found out Eastman lost d's prescreening....:( Luckily I have all the receipts and tracking info stating that it arrived there. They were VERY nice and said to just send in another recording, which we did. Unfortunately, our preferred audition date was last weekend! Things do happen for a reason, right?

Notfrome: oh No! Will this really mess up your schedule? I hope they expedite the results so you can begin figuring out logistics!

D's February is completely full. When she is not traveling for auditions, she has performance commitments. I have to just look at it as...what ever happens, happens.

Anyone know a good accompanist in Boston? DD has regional audition for Miami University (Frost School of Music) on Feb 11th (Wed morning, audition time is 9:35...needs to be there 1/2 hour early to warm up)

Have also emailed DD vocal teacher and vocal coach who may very well come up with someone....so just in case :)

Call NEC piano or voice dept for a recommendation. Whenever D has had a regional audition, she calls the closest music school for a rec and its never been a problem.
