Pre-Screening Results 2008-2009

Thank you so much to ALL of you who replied with such honesty and truly helpful advice to my last post. I believe that everything you have said is spot on, and I will take all of this advice to heart. I am so glad I joined this group--to know that there are other moms and dads going through the same stresses and trials as I am, and to give me such solid advice. I think all of you are wonderful, and I feel so much better now and ready to go on to the end with a better attitude and confidence that I can pass on to my son. Thank you!

Music4us - I agree with what others have said, but one suggestion I have is that your S call to find out the procedure for teacher assignments, rather than you. Not only will it be a good learning experience for him but I think the school may respond better to him. Maybe I was trained well by my D's current school - they are very up front about letting parents know that they expect things to be handled by the kids, not the parents.

On the other hand....Although it would be very good experience for son to make the call
regarding studio placement....I have been setting up all of DD apointments with teachers, contacting schools, etc...and have had very good response from the schools/teachers, etc...never once has it been a problem...With her dealing with 8 schools right now it is a bit overwhelming and she has enough on her plate as it is....I'm all for taking any pressure off of her right now than I can.

However, I absolutely agree that once she is in the school then she should be the one handling the problems that arise. She has had plenty of opportunites at school this year to learn those skills...ex. a piano teacher that never showed up...Took her all semester to get transferred out of the class and into a different one but she finally got it taken care of. They'll learn.

Good luck with the decisions :)

opera-mom - I completely understand that and did many of those things too, except for scheduling sample lessons. She wanted to deal with the teachers. I guess I put finding out about a procedure like studio assignments in a different category from scheduling appointments. Obviously, it is a decision that depends on the kid, but I just wanted to remind that, if they are not accustomed to making these calls and working things out, then there is no time like the present to start.

You might very well have a point there....might not have taken D whole semester to work out the piano teacher problem if she had more previous experience :)

My D get her invitation from Purchase today. That makes her 4 for 4 in schools that required prescreens and she's bouncing off the walls over that. She'll be at Purchase on March 7 as well.

Someone get some feedback from NYU Steinhardt and Purchase College about Graduate Jazz Performance auditions?
The auditions will be at the beginning of march and I still haven't any comunication about invitation for audition, someone have received invitation for Graduate Jazz Programs in theese schools?

Purchase

DD is BM VP performance....not jazz..but her notification came from Purchase 2 weeks ago for a March 7th audition....She received an email and it was also posted on her MyPurchase account....Have you checked you spam folder and MyPurchase account??

I would think you would have heard by now....I would suggest following up with the school if after checking the above you still don't find an answer

My son heard from Purchase for his undergrad Jazz audition on Jan. 21. Definitely call them.

I can't contact directly the schools because I'm applying through the Fulbright Commission in my country and IIE, they work for me on my application. They told me to wait because there are still no communications from NYU and Purchase but there are just a couple of weeks to the auditions. I think I still must wait!!
I've heard just from Manhattan School and Juilliard about prescreen. I've send my DVD audition for Manhattan.

Do you know when the final admissions will be comunicated more or less?

TheTurtle

If WindowBox heard about jazz auditions on Jan 21st (for Purchase)...you should also have heard by now....You need to contact whomever it is that can help you find out...even if it means contacting the school yourself....you could certainly email the school. All of the notifications for any particular program should have gone out the same day.

Contact information for SUNY Purchase is as follows:

Conservatory of Music:
914-251-6700(I don't know what other numbers you will need to add to the front to reach the united States. - you may need to use a 1 right before these numbers)
Email address is: music@purchase.edu

Addmissions office:
914-251-6300
Email address is admissions@purchase.edu

AS far as when final acceptances into music programs go....Most notify students by April 1st...some are a little sooner than that....Then you will have until May 1st to notify (in writting) the school that you are accepting a position and to also have your deposit turned in.

I think The Turtle's dates for his acceptances will be a bit different because he's (I assume the poster is male, but if I am incorrect, please accept my apology!) looking at a Graduate program. The dates are always posted on the web site. Is there no way that the folks at the Fullbright Commission can assist you? The audition dates are rapidly approaching and so are Easter/Srping breaks from schools and if travel arrangememts must be made, the window of opportunity is small. Good luck!

Thanks for the answer, I'm a male you're right! :)
Fulbright told me to wait for a communication from the school
but it's really late to arrange a live audition to this point, I will choose for a DVD audition, it's possible at NYU, I don't know about Purchase.
They forbidden us to contact directly the school so I think I must wait some more days, but it's very hard!

Good choice! I think we all understand how hard the waiting is- that's one reason why we gather here to suffer together!

Hi all, I haven't posted for a while. In my last post, I mentioned my son's inability to focus, and, perhaps, I mentioned that he wasn't playing his best. Turns out he has juvenile diabetes, and he was hospitalized last week with a blood glucose level of 515, ketones, and dehydration. Anyway, he's learned a lot since then on how to manage and eat properly, take insulin, etc., and we went ahead and had his Peabody audition on Monday. (He's piano performance.) The audition went very well, better than his first two auditions for the UMD and Oberlin. I feel so bad--at the Oberlin audition on Feb. 2nd--which was regional--he forgot his Prokofiev right in the middle of it. But now we know that he's been playing his auditions, recitals, and competitions (probably since school started) with high blood sugar, and I feel so very bad about all of this. No wonder her couldn't concentrate. His focus and concentration are much better now that his blood sugar is under control. Not a good thing to get juvenile diabetes, but, at least, we now know what has been wrong with him. We'll be going to Eastman for an audition on the 27th. Will anyone else be up there then? I'm not looking forward to the snow we'll most likely have to drive in up there. Just not used to it at all, and I hope there's not a storm when we go up.

So sorry to hear about your sons diagnosis...do not feel bad that you didn't figure it out sooner...it happens gradually...you weren't expecting it....Thank goodness he now knows and can face it head on....I'm sure in a way it is a relief to him as he now knows why he couldn't concentrate.

Good luck to your son in the up coming audition

Hi Music,

I am so terribly sorry to hear of your son's recent diagnosis with Juvenile/Type 1 Diabetes. My daughter is turning 18 next week and was diagnosed when she was 8. We have amazing professionals involved in "our" care over the past 10 years. And I say "our" care because everyone gets to participate in keeping her on the best track for good health - the disease is not hers alone to fight. Please feel free to PM me if you would like to talk. I wish you all the best as you forge ahead with the audition process and type 1 diabetes education for yourself and your son. BTW, there are wonderful applications on ITunes that provide nutional information for carbohydrate counting for insulin to carb calculations. Our daughter has the nutritional guide on her Itouch so she can go out to supper and simply look up the carbs instead of dragging a reference book along with her! Take care!

I'm so sorry to hear about your son's hospitalization! He must have had amazing tenacity to continue to audition at those levels! I'm glad he's on the road to recovery and control of his sugar levels. Best of luck on the remainder of his auditions.

Speaking of hospitals and auditions, my mother was admitted to the hospital last night. I had to cancel two auditions this weekend. Luckily, schools are understanding, but I just really just want my mom to get better.

So sorry about your mom! Do you have family there with you? Keep us posted. Lorelei
