I know that F & M has very good science programs and has a large number of pre-med students. My D is interested in pre-veterinary programs, too. Vet schools require more science courses than med schools and typically are harder to get into because there are so few of them. Apparently, vet schools place a high value on related experience working with animals and on research involvement. Thus schools with good pre-vet programs can assist with opportunities for undergrads to participate in research and assist undergrads in obtaining internships, shadowing opportunities, etc… working with animals.
Does F&M have pre-vet program? Do they assist with research/internship opportunities for pre-vet students? How successful has F&M been in terms the success of it’s students getting accepted by veterinary schools?
Hi - I don’t know if you are still following this thread: My D is also interested in pre-Vet. She is applying ED to F&M to their animal behavior program (it is part of the biological foundations of behavior program). We met with the head of the program and discussed just these issues with him. The only potential issue they said was that most vet schools required a biochemistry class, and F&M does not have one on a regular basis (they are offered like every other year by a visiting professor). But overall I am told they have been successful in getting their students into vet school, and provide great opportunities for internships and on the group experience. Hope this is helpful.
