Just some background info first. I'm going to Berkeley this fall (not that there's anything wrong with UCLA, Berkeley is just farther from home :P). I've heard horror stories about chem 1A from both college confidential and actual students on campus when I went to visit. My high school had a terrible chemistry class so I have no real knowledge on the subject. I'm going to UCLA for the summer and I want to prep myself. Are there any "pre-chem" classes? Someone told me Chem 20A would be a good pick over the summer.

chem1a is a much easier class during summer session at berkeley. this is due to the lack of premeds who ruin the curve (1.5+ SD is an A). by taking the course at ucb, you will get full credit for the course and not have to worry about whether it will transfer and you will make friends that last four years.

i suggest you make a thread in the berkeley forum as well. they will be much more knowledgeable and can give much better advice than i can.
