You don’t have to answer this, but are you from Vancouver? You sound like someone I briefly knew.

Anyway, some comments before I chance you:

SAT Mandarin. If you’ve got a Chinese last name, it really won’t matter that technically you learned (and may have worked hard at) Chinese after English. SAT Mandarin won’t be as impressive as SAT Spanish for you.

Other stats are competitive.

ECs are amazing and very focused.

Nevertheless, most of the schools are reaches for everyone. I would say Berkeley, Rise, Emory, and maybe Cornell and Brown are easier than the rest. You are, however, very competitive at all of them.

Chance me? <a href=“Claremont Mckenna, Duke, Bucknell, Grinnell, UofR chances! - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1690007-claremont-mckenna-duke-bucknell-grinnell-uofr-chances-p1.html</a></p>

You have a great narrative in your ECs – very similar to mine and I was accepted and/or waitlisted at several of those schools (now attending one!).

Debate is such a great EC!!

I think you stand a great chance if you keep to that theme of workers rights/feminism/ international affaris/ etc., but your GPA is a bit low (maybe you went to a competitive school?)

At Cornell, you should consider the ILR school. It seems like you’d be a great fit. And there is the Woodrow Wilson school at princeton.

At this point, it’s all about framing your application to tell your story, what motivates you, etc.,.

As far as your hook goes, I’m not sure if that’s a good one / one you should focus your application on. So many international/CHinese first generation, unless your family grew up in abject poverty or suffered great hardship under a poor law (hey! Ties into int’l law, which all your ECs are!) .

@kate244‌ Thanks so much for the advice! My parents never attended college because of the cultural revolution (my dad was born in '46) and did grow up in abject poverty (communist china ftw). Right now, my essay is on a stuttering speech impediment I have conquered, how MUN helped give me that boost of confidence, and how I use my voice to help others and encourage others now!

My grade is extremely competitive. We are a suburban public school in Canada, and most people don’t even know what ivy leagues are. However, there are 11 people in our grade applying to top schools in the US this year. My GPA is a tad low because of a 72% in Math 10 and a 82% in Science 10 (I suck at sciences and math). I do hope I compensated for the poor grades by getting 95% in Math 11 and 92% in Biology 11!

Bump! Will chance back :)

Bump! Just got my October SAT scores back and I got 800 CR, 760 WR, and 720 Math! What are my chances with the much higher SAT Math score??
