Columbia (Deferred ED)-Rejected
Cornell- Accepted
Harvard- Rejected
NYU- Accepted
Penn- Waitlist
Yale- Rejected
@ninadaisy Thanks! I actually already got into Penn, Cornell, and NYU with likely letters.
@wilguen omg congrats! I guess as of now I am 2/3
@ninadaisy Haha thanks!!
Bump!
Academic record is fine, but ECs are blah and high schooly only. Nothing suggests you reached out beyond your boundaries. However, Hispanics are the flavor of the month at these colleges, but getting deferred ED at Columbia is surprising. My prediction is that you get into Columbia and Cornell and are waitlisted elsewhere.
@makennacompton Thanks for chancing! I actually received likely letters from Cornell and Penn already. And throughout the thread I was posting a bit of updates. I ranked 1st in my state for Academic Decathlon and 32nd in the nation (first if you exclude CA and TX) after my regionals competition.
Cornell/ NYU/ Penn you definitely got
I predict you will get into one (maybe two) from Columbia, Harvard, and Yale
@Peezus Already got into those three on likely letter!! You’re 3/6 hahaha let’s hope for more
Anyone else?
I just don’t get the ED deferral from Columbia. Your accumulation of likelies are making them look more short-sighted by the day. Perhaps Columbia – sitting in the Puerto Rican epicenter of new York city – sees more than its fair share of Hispanic applicants and doesn’t need to reach out to them. On the other hand, I think Harvard, Yale, etc. don’t see enough and so I predict acceptance for you to these schools. I know that harvard and Yale regularly scour Texas for Hispanics, so you should be in good shape.
@makennacompton I think it also might have been because of my essays. I rewrote all of them for the other schools and looking back on my Columbia supplements they hardly compare to my new ones. To support your theory, Columbia has the highest percentage of Hispanics than any of the other Ivy leagues by about 3%
Bump
Unless you have other sources of income from other family members, or youre willing to take out loans, a family income of 130K puts you in an awkward position. Youre still gonna have to shell out a good deal to go to any of those schools, assuming typical assets. I imagine youve already thought about that and youve discussed this with your family. So I suppose forget that if so
Looking at your app, I can tell you’re a nerd! But that’s good, you have to be to get in to these schools. What’s important though is that youre MORE than a nerd. Ivies arent looking for academic robots, they want multi-faceted, three-dimensional students. You have great achievements with your academic decathlon, you test scores are flawless, your GPA is top of the notch and your course rigor is where it needs to be. However, it looks like you dont have any hobbies. Do you play an instrument, do any sports for fun, have a passion for animals or robotics? These are things you should mention, because they make you seem human. Depending on how you spin acadeca you might be able to make that seem like a hobby but who knows. Just be careful your app doesnt blend in with the rest. URM will help a great deal.
Predictions:
Columbia (Deferred ED) - rejected
Harvard - high reach
NYU - accepted
Yale - high reach
@giraffeinatree Oh yeah the net price calculator calculates about 20k a year for the ivies, which my parents are paying around 15k of, I just have to make up the rest in loans, which is totally fine with me. And I do actually have hobbies hahaha! I wrote my entire common app essay on skateboarding, which I’ve done for about 7 years now. It’s not a school sport and there aren’t really any awards associated with it so I can’t really put it directly in the common app, but I consider it a cornerstone of my childhood and my life.
BUMP!
Guys last night to get some predictions in!
You will probably get into one of three but not more than one. Based on the stats I have, I bet it will be Columbia.
@as9934 Even after being deferred? Thanks for predicting anyways!
