I have taken one year of Pre-AP/Honors Chemistry (No Chem II/AP Chem). I want to fulfill the general Chemistry requirement, with reasonable grading. Should I take 112, 114, or 118? Which has the most reasonable grading scale? I've heard that 114 will kill your GPA :(

Please answer soon because I need to pre-register by tonight (plane at 7 am)

This is probably late lol but I took ap chemistry my junior year (I’m a senior in high School) and it was my first year of chem and our class went at a faster pace then Washington State University and it was pretty hard but I Pulled off an A on both semesters along with my 7 other ap classes and I was fine. And since you goto Yale I would think you could handle the hardest class :).

Nope, I disagree. First, which one were you placed into? If you were placed into 118, then you should be fine. Check it out. It’s faster pace but easier grading.

If you did not get placed into 118: I’d say - stay away from 114. Profs suck, grading is horrible, and TAs were not that good, IMO. 112 is more of a commitment (2 sections, instead of just 1) but I think it’s worth it because you’ll know the material really well. Take the better grade and the lower level.

Feel free to take the placement exam as well to check if you can move up to 118.

Thank you so much for replying. Is the grading about the same or worse than 118? I actually got placed in 114, unfortunately, but I’m okay with moving down. Should I still take 112? I heard 118 is for people who took Chem 2 in high school, and is only a semester.

If you were placed in 114 or 118, do you have to take the placement exam if you want to take 118? It doesn’t sound like you have to take the placement exam, but I just want to make sure.

I’ve heard that 114 isn’t that great of a class… Many current Yalies have told me that it covers lots of material that is extremely basic (i.e. the mole concept, which is covered in pretty much every basic chemistry class in high school) and that it isn’t particularly challenging as a result. I can’t say anything about 112, and I got placed into 118…

If you were placed into 118, you don’t have to take the placement test, unless you want to take Freshman Orgo. If you got placed into 114, you can either take 114, or take the placement test to try and get into 118.

I personally think that 118 is a better class all around. The problem with 114 is that the concepts aren’t difficult to understand, but the Psets and tests can be reallly difficult because the professors are purposely trying to create a bell curve.

The material in 114 isn’t basic as much as just simple. It’s not too hard to understand them.

Thanks for all your help, drbigboyjoe9505. One last question before I pre-register…is the grading decent in 112? Is it about as reasonable as 118? I think I will go with 112 over 118 then, I have no time to review for a placement test, since I’m going on FOOT.

Actually, your basic opinion and review of 112 would be good.

You can always get into a higher level class if you really want, and I’ll second the “no 114” comments. I didn’t take it, but many people from my entryway who did, and they gave uniformly negative reviews. Basically, the class is boring and the associated lab is absolutely miserable. Don’t take it unless you absolutely have to.

Take the placement exam to get into 118. It’s one term, fair grading, and you get a solid review of what’s important. Don’t take 114 unless you really want a year of painful gen chem.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but while we’re on the topic of chem placement, how hard is the placement test? I’ve been placed into 114 and 118 and I’m trying to move up to 124. I always thought placement tests were supposed to be really hard so they could test the whole range of abilities, but the math and chinese ones were really easy … is chem the same?

It’s not bad. You may be hard pressed to answer everything correctly, but I probably got about 60% and made it into Orgo. That being said, how hard/easy you find the placement test may be an indication of whether you should start off with orgo or review gen chem.
