<p>Should I put my English name that I go by on the common app under preferred name even though it's not in any formal documents? It's not even in any of my records, whenever the teacher first calls role I just tell him or her that I go by this name.</p>

<p>Yup, I'm pretty sure that's the purpose of preferred name-it's whatever you go by.</p>
<p>At some colleges, if you enroll they make your email address a combination of your preferred name and your last name, so it's probably best to put whatever it is people call you.</p>
