Preferred Resume Format for Georgetown

Hi everyone. Thank you in advance for your time. I just have a question about Resume formats. I'm currently working on my application for Georgetown, and I know that I should include some sort of supplementary resume/"bragsheet" along with filling out the little table that's given for extracurricular activities. However, here's my question: How long should my resume be and in what specific format? I've heard two sides:

Either (1) Be as specific as you can and include all that you've done (this is advice from a current G-town student) or (2) keep your resume strictly 1 page, and cut out all the superfluous information, only keeping the most important things (advice from a U.Penn grad). So which one is it? I know that I'm personally going with number 1, but I'm afraid of annoying admissions officers with too much info. =/

Also, which format do you think is better? There's the regular resume format that's kind of like in list form.. with bullets and topic headings. But I recently read a book called "Rock Hard Apps" and it strongly recommended the table format, similar to the one on the application, stating School years, hrs.per wk/wk per year, etc. It's extremely detailed and extremely organized. One problem: It is impossible to keep the information to one page. It does, however, look veeeery professional. Anyway, which format do you think is most favorable?

Thanks so much!

I don't know about formatting, but in terms of length I would definitely avoid being overly long. I would definitely condense the information and only include the most important achievements from only the last 4 years. One page would be ideal, 2 is pushing it, and it is very rare that a high schooler's experiences would justify a 3 page resume. I personally did not submit a seperate resume because I only listed my most important experiences and I got accepted. Do whatever feels right but don't get carried away with yourself.

Thank you for your help! Anyone else? I posted this thread on the Penn forum too, and they were rather discouraging about sending in a resume. I just think that it would be beneficial to my application because at least admissions officers can see me in the whole picture. If they're not interested, then they can just put it aside, but at least they have that option to do so.

I don't remember if I sent it to Georgetown, but I did have a table format "brag sheet" that came in handy for scholarships and as reference for everything else. I managed to keep it to one page, using small fonts and landscape formatting (as opposed to portrait). At one time it was also color coded! (Activities matched with awards for those activities.)

I really wish I could remember if I sent that sheet to Georgetown now! If I did, it didn't hurt too much because I got in. If I didn't, then I can't really tell you what they'd like better. But my personal advice is to make a table one because it will be so much use in other applications and scholarship applications!

Hope that helps some!

Thanks so much Kate! Color coordination sounds really cute! I will definitely try it

I actually sent in an "activity list" to most of my colleges and it ran about 4 pages. I know that sounds like a lot and it is b/c I did a lot in high school. The format is basically the table from the common app but just bigger/lengthier. My main concern was that it would be too much but i got the idea from a book written by Michelle Hernandez called "Acing the College Application" - the book was extremely helpful and she said that the "activity list" should be b/w 2 and 4 pages. She graduated from Dartmouth and served as an admissions counselor there for four years so I definetly took her advice and my guidance counselor was very impressed w/the list as well.

IloveGtown, thanks! I actually have that book at home along with my "Rock Hard Apps" book! I'm so glad that your backing me up on this activity sheet, because I had the same thread on the Penn forum, and they basically *****ed at me and created all this drama. It was horrible. Just read it and you'll be amazed...

yeah, the Penn kids were pretty harsh, lol. But if u have the book and youve read it then I think you know that it is best to send in an Activity List. If you want ill even send u mine so you can look it over.

Just neat and orderly. Mine was about size 10 font and two/three full pages. I was admitted to SFS so maybe option 1 is best, at least for Georgetown.
