how competitive is it to get into premed program in U of I?
I hear that there are not many internship oppourtunities there because it doesn't have a med school.
oh yea, will I get into premed?

hm i guess it has a med school. sorry for my ignorance

University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign definitely has a med school although the University of Illinois sytem’s main med school is actually at University of Illinois Chicago.

Pre-med is not med school. Pre-med is also not a college major. What pre-med is is simply that you go to college and make sure you take all the required courses for admission to med school (such as math, sciences, writing) regardless of what your major is (many pre-meds major in a science but med students do come from other majors including such seemingly unrelated majors as Philosophy or English). You do not actually get admitted to pre-med at UIUC. If you check it on your app and are otherwise admitted, using the same criteria as any other admitted student not in pre-med, you will be provided info after admission about UIUC’s pre-med program. In other words, it is no more or less difficult to be admitted if you check the pre-med box or do not.

To get into med school, you need high GPA in college, high MCAT, and completion of the pre-med course requirements. UIUC’s pre-med program is an advisory program (as it is at other colleges) and one objective is to advise you as to courses required and many times to “advise” students who are not doing so well in their course work that they should consider moving on to some other career path. It can also recommend internships to consider and apply for (but as a college student you are not going to be doing anything that a med student does) and whether you actually get any is more personal to you and your abilities.

Also, be aware for admission to UIUC, since you mention them – recs are not considered for admission, neither are SAT II scores.

thx much !!
