Im am looking to stay in-state for Premed because of cost. Thus, I was looking at colleges in Ohio, but there doesnt seem to be much. Im basically looking at Ohio State, Miami of Ohio, University of Toledo (Bioengineering program), and Ohio University. Does anyone have any suggestions, advice, or preference?

There are some programs that admit you as a freshman. You have to maintain a certain GPA and get a minimum score on the MCAT and are guaranteed admission to med school. Miami Univ has this program with Univ of Cinci med school. MiamiDAP is a user on this board with a daughter enrolled there. You may also want to check out NEOUCOM, another guaranteed admission program for schools in northeast Ohio. My son decided on a guaranteed physician assistant program, which we found at several schools in PA.

case western

So if you're basically 100% sure about medical school and are trying to save $$, I would reallyreallyreally recommend trying for a "guaranteed admit" program...a lot of my friends are applying to med school now and not only have to pay to take the MCAT, but have to pay $100 admissions fees at dozens of med schools, AND need to FLY out to have interviews...a little ridiculous. So yeah, if you can get "admitted" early to med school sans separate application/MCAT, I'd do it. Anyway, particular schools...

Ohio State: they have a 7-year med program some of my friends are doing, and they all love it. Basically, once you get in you get automatic admission to OSU's med school (which is v. good) as long as you keep a 3.5. OSU's a great school (hands-down best public school in Ohio), with great people and a pretty flexible social scene. I would probably put this at the top of my list...OSU has GREAT sciences and engineering, esp. in their honors program.

Case Western...GREAT medical school...very good sciences. The only downside is that the campus life there is kind of blah. They also have an 8-year guaranteed admission program, which is nice because you wouldn't have to take the MCAT.

NEOUCOM...you get in and out in six years. The only downside is that you don't really get a full-fledged undergrad experience, and you have to take classes in the summer.

Miami of Ohio...they have a program with Cincy med school, which, while good, is not quite the same caliber as OSU or CWRU. I can't speak objectively about Miami, since I really didn't like it...it's basically 95% white, very preppy and very Greek. Still a pretty good school academically, though.

Toledo/OU...Ok schools, but not famed for their sciences or engineering. Also reallllly big into partying.

OSU is a great school and it has a respectable honors program it would also save you loads of money. I live in central Ohio and I think about 1/3 of my school ends up attending OSU and they all seem to love it. I think it has a good program.
