Premed:Math 16A+Alternatives to R&C which satisfy English requirement?

I received my IB scores back recently. Because I passed IB English HL with a 6, I have the option of waiving the entire R&C requirement during my studies at Berkeley.

Would anyone be willing to share suggestions for classes that they have enjoyed which may satisfy the English prerequisite for most medical schools? As of now, I have signed up for L&S R44, but if anyone provides other interesting courses, I may reconsider :) .

In addition, although I have had plans aiming for an MCB major for quite a while, I have now heavily considered studies in Molecular Toxicology and Cognitive Science (with a neuroscience emphasis), and switching to CNR (simultaneous degrees, perhaps?). Because I would like to focus more on sciences, should I take Math 16A instead of Math 1A? Would there be any negative perception of me studying in the former, and will most medical schools like UCSF and UCD accept this for the calculus prerequisite?

Thank you in advance!

*Phase II is on Thursday for me. As of now, my planned schedule is VS 24, Chem 1A, Math 1A, L&S R44, and CogSci C1. But based on responses, the list may change.

I’m in a very similar situation to you and I had a lot of trouble deciding between Math 1A and 16A (I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB test) but I think I am going with 16A for now to help me wade into Berkeley and get a feel for the difficulty of classes before delving much further. As of now, the majors I am thinking about don’t require 1A, and if I decide to change later to something that requires 1A I can simply retake the class. I’m also starting off with the premed route and thinking about switching from L&S to CNR! Thinking about Nutritional Science or MolTox maybe as well, but someone I’ve talked to on CC said their MolTox experience was not as interesting as other courses.

If you think you have a high chance for doing MCB, I would probably suggest 1A since you’ll need it as a major pre-req.

Any R&C will qualify as an english course for med schools, but you need to save the syllabus to let them see that the actual subject of the course is reading and writing in English, not German, Film or other subject from whatever department is providing the R&C class.

Wait, so courses like African American Studies R1A would not count to medical schools? I remember my brother took a class, his R1B was English department but the subject material was “literature in video games.”

African American Studies R1A would count, but rider730 is just saying that you need to let medical schools know that it is indeed an English class, because they may not know.

Thank you for helping, everyone!

I was just curious…I was skimming through courses online, and recently became aware of a class, College Writing 105. If I were to waive R&C (prerequisites to this course), would this qualify for one semester of the English requirement of the premedicine curriculum? I would like to improve my writing, and this course seems very interesting.

Also, say I wished to take Anthro R5B (offered in the spring term) after ColWrit 105. Even though both halves of R&C must be completed to take the latter, would enrollment and completion of Anthro R5B still be counted?

If you are waived from the need to take R&C, you can still take them, that is not disallowed. Same is true for those who might have AP credit that theoretically lets them waive bio or physics - for med school, you take the course in college anyway since most med schools don’t like AP credit in lieu of actual coursework to the premed requirements.

Since you are waived for R&C, you are considered to have the equivalent of R&C A for the purposes of registering in R&C B classes like Anthro R5B.

So your plan clearly works and furthermore having even better writing skills will help marginally in many classes you take, if your work on assignments and exams is slightly more persuasive and cogent, it may garner you just enough extra to push over the line to the next grading option, maybe from an A- to an A for example.

Many thanks, rider730. I guess I will take ColWrit 105 this fall, and follow with Anthro R5B then.
