While I always thought that the prep programs were for leaders/atheletes (and prior enlisted) needing academic assistance, we were offered (and accepted) the AOG prep spot. Child was a national merit scholar, top 10% at a competitive hs, 1500 SAT..active in ECs on a national level, ...but limited sports... as we have learned more --while some initial dissapointment with not being a diect admit... we know we're fortunate to have this opportunity.. and in the end believe it was the very best thing ---we will see though --as it appears he will be better prepared (prepped so to speak:)) for BCT in summer fo 2006

I do suspect that most (or at least more than not) at the prep programs are there for academic brushing

My impression has always been that there's a big difference between USMAPS and AOG prep. USMAPS tends to attract athletes and prior enlisted, and is primarily focused on bringing that group up to the standard academically.

The stats for folks going to AOG prep always seemed much stronger - seemed kind of like a "we want you but can't fit you in" kind of profile.

AOG is generally, at least from what my regional admissions counselor told me...for people who are triple q-ed and are placed on the national waiting list for whatever reason (already accepted enough people in your state...etc) The prep school is generally for prior enlisted, recruited athletes, and people who are great in every way except need some academic brushing up.
