Prep school or Public High School?

Hey! I am going to be a frehman this year. I got accepted to Vermont Academy prep school this year... late notice, and i'm not sure if i should go or not? My brother might go too and he will be a sophmore so we will be together and home is only 2.5hours away. The school is small and easy to navigate. I haven't been to a public HS obviously because i am going to be a freshman so i dont know what that is like or if i will like it or not. I don't get home sick and i will be able to see my friends and family over breaks.

In middle school I was top in my class with straight A's. I play hockey and soccer and i'm pretty good at both. During my interview at Vermont Academy I was told i had a very good chance at making the varsity teams for both sports.

I would really like to get into St. Lawrence college when the time comes! Would Vermont Academy higher or lower my chances for getting into St. Lawrence? Would it be better to stay at my public school so i could go to St. Lawrence for college?

My parents aren't sure they can pay for it yet because the lady hasn't gotten back to us about financial aid but i really hope i can go. I think Vermont Academy is the right place for me and i am really excited that i got accepted.

What do you think i should do? Thanks for your time [that seems pretty long. sorry]

I think that if you're excited to go, then go. You'll have a blast. While doing the same amount of work will elicit better grades at a public school, you have more options (extracurricular clubs, etc) going to a private high school and the private one is more likely to be connected with St. Lawrence than a public school would.

In my opinion, people do better at schools where they're excited to go. If you're excited to go to a private school, you'll be more likely to accept the challenge and motivate yourself if you're sure that you're in an environment you'll enjoy! :)

I'm entering 8th grade but i know enough about prep school to really tell you about them. You should attend the prep school. You seem comfortable and prepared enough. Prep really gives you a better high school experience. If your brother is there too, then the family part is taken care of.
P.S. Your message wasn't too long.

Greetings iluvhcky,

Having a daughter (rising sophomore) who attends a similar school (which always could use a couple more quality players but defeated Vermont Academy last season), I can tell you that 2 of the kids who graduated from my D's school in May (I don't post it online) are going to St. Lawrence this year.

So yes, it shouldn't hurt your chances as long as you do well. I agree with the thought that the prep school will do a better job with college advisement and placement work than public schools.

If things don't work out with FA, do you have any alternatives? I know it is kind of late, but if you've got your stuff in order (SSS FA paperwork), there may be schools that can accommodate you. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I'm not sure where you are, but my D's school wouldn't be a horrible drive from where you are. You can PM me for details.

In any event, good luck and let us know how things work out!

I have decided to stay at my school at home. I was excited for prep school. very excited. but i think i got ahead of myslef.
When i started soccer here, because the tryouts were before school, i made new friends and re-connected with old friends who were going to the school at home.
If i went to prep school i would be missing my home town and all the people here a lot.

Thanks for your feedback even though all of you told me i should go to the prep school. =]
