my advice is to not do much now… Start learning vocab now, and that’s really it. When it gets to be about 3 months before, start reading through the prep books, and do like a test once or twice a week. Then as it gets closer to the test, do more and more practice tests.

I agree with Satman, however, i would say to start actually practicing 5 months prior, if you’re aiming for that perfect score. I had a 1540 the first time i took the SAT (beginning of my junior year last year), and right now I believe im at about a 1900-2000 (My prediction for October 5, 2013 Exam), because i practiced for about 4 months since the June exam. Yeah I may seem inferior to those who get straight 800s, but i improved by almost 400 points, which shows that my method would work.

So here is what i recommend:

October - End of December: Direct Hits Vol 1 + Vol 2 + Gruber’s Prefix-Root-Suffix List + Gruber’s 3400 word list. Three months should be more than enough for that.

January - End of February: Start studying the College Board Blue Book, and do the questions they give you, and FOCUS ON YOUR WEAKNESSES. Look at what you’re doing wrong, and understand the explanations. Then redo those questions a week later, and make sure you GET THEM RIGHT, and KNOW why its right.

March - April: Do at least one full practice test a week. (This means you would have to buy multiple books, so SAVE UP). For practice tests, i recommend Gruber’s Complete SAT Guide 2014, as well as the College Board book 2nd Edition.

April - Test Day: Review those Vocab words you learned. Retake the practice tests(One a day), and make the SAT the only thing you see in front of you. This month is the most crucial part for improving your score.

Optional: Take the SAT once, if you haven’t already, to see where you stand. I would recommend you take it in January, right before you begin practicing for it.

I definitely agree that you should take the SAT once to set a benchmark for yourself. I took it in January just to see where I stood and scored 1980 (580 Cr 770 M 620 W). Doing this can actually motivate you to study more (if you’re score is not where you want to be, as was mine). My “low” (for my standards) score motivated me to practice way more and I ended up scoring 2240 in March (680 CR 760 M 800 W). I think I brought CR up to 750+ a couple days ago though… so yay!
