What to do for sat prep

I'm taking the January SAT, and I have a prep book but I'm not taking a class or anything like that. How soon should I start studying, and what do you think I should do (like practice tests, just going through the book, vocab flashcards, etc)?

THANKS!

learn from he practice test.
it is the most efficient way.

Thanks, how long before the test should I start studying?

You should start studying now. Take lots of practice tests, maybe ~1 per week. Examine the questions that you get wrong and understand why you got them wrong. The SAT is more about practice than anything else, IMO... If you find a particularly weak area while you go through practice tests, use your prep book to review it. If your weakness turns out to be sentence completions, study some vocab words.

Okay I have taken the SATs three times, my third time was this past time so I can advise you what you should not do, and what in my opinion (IMO) you should.

For my first SAT:

May 2008:

I

1) took Kaplan classes
2) did not do the homework for those classes because I had no time
3) did as well as I did on the practice tests. Got the same exact score actually which was not too fly.

October 2008

I

1) Did all the Kaplan homework I had.
2) re-took the SAT classes.
3) took 3-4 Kaplan SATs -- but did not go over them enough because the ones I got wrong - I had no explanations.

December 2008

I

1) did not do anything Kaplan
2) Bought the Online College Board course - for 70$ its a bargain compared to Kaplans $1,200 (especially if you are weak in Math and/or Writing.)
2) Did all of the SATs from both the online course and the blue book. AND I WENT OVER THEM ALL. It literally took me 2-3 hours to go over one test in the beginning, but as I moved along it started getting easier.
3) Went through Kaplan flaschards (which you can buy on Amazong -- the KAPLAN ones) It helped me raise my score a few points I'm sure this time around.

I think I did well, and better this time around.

Ok so what you should do:

Starting now:

1) realize that you should use your time wisely, wisely, wisely, wisely. I mean that. I wish I had more time before my SAT but I did not.
2) Take at least ten of those collegeboard tests but don't compromise thoroughly going over them. You need, NEED, need to understand each and every Math and Writing question you get right and wrong. They are both equally important. Once you see how you do a math problem via your method and you see the collegeboard method, you realize that there are so many easier methods. Trust me on this one.
3) Make a schedule, how are you going to use your christmas break. I know, XMAS break.. boo-hoo. I studied all through thanksgiving on my vacation.

IF you need any more help or advice - do NOT hesitate to contact me. Please send me a CC message and I will respond!

You can raise your score at least, at least 100-200 points by using all of what I told you.

take every test you have, go through them thoroughly. abkid91 has some good advice. look thru it.
