Preparing for Career in International Service

I recently graduated with a degree in Economics and Government, with minors in International Relations and German Studies. My long-term goal is to join the Department of State. However I would only want to do that after I get some other work experience, and get a masters degree.

Currently I'm working at a think-tank doing public policy research, which is fine experience, but I definitely don't want to be here more than a year. I had applied to Peace Corps, but they recently told me they didn't have any space to offer me (which kinda sucked...I may reapply). Ideally I'd like a short-term (1-3 years) position doing economic development or international trade. After getting some experience under my belt, I think I'll be better prepared to choose an appropriate masters program. Plus I definitely need the experience to boost my application. My current thoughts on a masters are 1) Master of Public Policy/Administration 2) International Development/Trade/some specialized program.

Any ideas/suggestions? I really have little idea of what's available to work in entry level doing some sort of development work. Ideally I'd like something abroad.

have you looked at NGOs? or the UN (I’m sure it’s very difficult to get in here… much like State)? World Bank? IMF?
