I am also a big burberry supporter, but that isn’t necessarily a preppy thing. VV’s ties can only be beat by a Burberry checker print.

^I never liked Burberry that much, but their trench coats are simply a classic, and a must have…

Definitely. No winter wardrobe is complete without a Burberry overcoat. I like the wool/cashmere blends the best. Plastic coats don’t work well for me, they emanate to much ‘fashion’ for the boarding school look. I just bought a new one for last winter and it is my favorite yet. But alas, it is not definition: preppy. J.Crew would have been the preppy choice, or perhaps Brooks Brothers.

donovan- nice bump. but its hilarious bc this thread is like 5 years old. Are you a prep? You seem to know an awful lot about it

It’s funny how things haven’t changed over the past five years, isn’t it? I like to wear nice things and engage in activities that could be considered preppy, but I prefer not to label myself and define myself that way. However, I do live a lifestyle parallel to the earlier definition I gave.

Boat shoes fo sho

Boat shoes aren’t as preppy anymore, because you’ll see them on hypebeasts and bros these days. They’re not as popular with these groups as Nikes, but they’re still prevalent enough.

Penny Loafers. Nothing better, and yes, Sperry boat shoes are always preppy, that’s directed at you, Jelly person. Just because a certain group wears something doesn’t mean that item is no longer preppy, it is the ensemble that counts. Plus, preppy isn’t just a look, it’s a lifestyle. That’s the key point of this thread I think.

^Ferrealz.
I don’t think it’s fair to associate buying nice clothes and wanting to look nice with the entire preppy stereotype.

Lol @ the thread’s tags

@Donovan95: Bawww, you don’t like someone’s opinion on the internet. Sob sob.
Anyway.
“Preppiness” carries with it a tone of exclusivity (yachts, large summer homes, old money, etc) and having the shoes (which are linked with boats, which are linked with wealth, which is in turn linked with exclusivity) spread to other subcultures devalues the exclusivity… Of course they’re still preppy - I didn’t say they ~absolutely~ weren’t - but they’ve kind of lost the “prep-factor”, so to speak. You don’t have to get all buttfrustrated about it. Seriously. They’re just shoes.

@PleaseRice:
I’m sorry, but in order to be a prep you must dress nicely. If not, you’re not truly a preppy. However, preps are not the only people who dress nicely if that’s what you are trying to get at. Like I’ve been saying before, it is a lifestyle one must live, not day job you quit when you go home. Abercrombie and Fitch preppies are a member of the “wanna be” crowd. Bad idea to wear that in preppy company.

No, I agree with you on that. I’m saying that it isn’t the only qualifying factor that makes a person preppy, though. There’s a difference between wanting to look nice and being a prep. People can dress in ‘preppy clothes’ for the sake of wanting to look nice and still not fall into the category.

Just look at the **[GQ](http://www.gq.com/)[/b] magazine. I think they are the definition of preppy. And I took a few pages off their words. lul

Hugo boss, prada, a little armani, and some j crew are good. Sperry’s as well. Th

You’re getting a little to ‘high fashion’ to be considered preppy. Those are high end and fashionable clothes, but being preppy isn’t necessarily about fashion. The fashion of the prep lifestyle has been the same for 40 or 50 years. Madras shorts, seersucker, khakis and chinos, polo shirts, rugby shirts and others. I agree with Hugo Boss, some of his sweaters and suits could be preppy, however, prada is too far up the scale. They’re too fashion forward and daring, where as the prep lifestyle is all about the classics of the past. Armani is the same thing. J. Crew is perfect. I like your choice of watches and cars. Sports, I definitely agree. No football, wrestling, softball, volleyball is iffy as well as baseball. Prep sports that are popular are Swimming, Crew, Polo, Golf, Tennis, Track or XC.

^^Whoa, whoa. Prada and Armani is high fashion, not preppy. A prep won’t wear those things. J. Crew is preppy though. To say it simply, preppy clothing is simple, not over the top, but classic.

AKA the opposite of Abercombie. I remember middle school… “She’s wearing Hollister; she is SUCH a prep!”

Then there’s the distinction between Northern and Southern preppy…

Hollister and Abercrombie are not considered preppy. Abercrombie is not worn by preps. Hollister is for people who want a beachy look.

Toxic93:
That’s literally exactly what I said. Haha. Glad we agree.
