I feel so out of it…I’m the girl that goes for the comfort and if it doesn’t cost a lot of money…b/c to be honest 72 dollar Sperrys are too expensive compared to 12 dollar fake leather clearance item from Marshall’s. Ain’t gonna spend that much money on clothes when I need to be paying for college and more important necessities (not that clothes aren’t).

It depends…preppy can look really good or really bad, it just depends on who is wearing it and how they’re wearing it.

I usually just buy/wear things that I think are nice looking…I don’t really think about being “preppy” or “trendy” or anything like that.

Man you can definitely can tell that the majority of college confidential is upper middle class to upper class by threads like these lol

I don’t really stress about my clothes, neither do any of my friends. I think the last time I went shopping was a year ago in the fall. My best friend and I went to thrift shops, goodwill, and stopped by my dad’s old girlfriend’s house where she gave us a bag full of some clothes she had as a teenager (‘vintage’ lol). My closet is probably 70% clothes previously owned by other people, and the rest is shirts I’ve gotten for $3 and jeans I’ve had since the eighth grade. Oh, and as for shoes, I have two pairs, besides my work shoes and flip-flops. A really old pair of classic all star converse and some black dress up flats.

I think we may be categorized as ‘hippies’ by a lot of people. Can’t say I care too much, paying for college is much more important than wearing ‘nice’ clothes to me. I do have a very respectable outfit (long black skirt, classy top) for interviews and the such, though. Otherwise, though, I really can’t see why people would care so much about their clothing. Be yourself, have fun, live life. It doesn’t have to be about fitting in or what others think of you. Thats how I feel anyway, its perfectly fine if others do care about their clothing.

I walked out of my house today in pink Sperrys, atheltic shorts, and a UVA tshirt… I really don’t care what people think. If it’s comfortable, I’ll wear it.

@Goodbyehello: So you’d rather spend $12 on poor quality slippers that will break on you almost instantaneously with even the slightest wear? Or would you rather spend that $72 (you can get Sperrys on sale for ~$50) on a pair of high-quality shoes that you can beat up over and over and still get tons of wear out of WHILE looking better as they age? My Sperrys from Freshman year have been through hell and back and look awesome in their worn stage, and there’s a lot more life left to them. I’m a big proponent of purchasing quality items that will last me for a long time.

@UVAorBust: That’s legittt haha sometimes I’ll go to the gym and lift in my Sperrys. Can’t go wrong.

Preppy as in classics? I agree. But with a twist, like bright colors or busy patterns. There’s nothing wrong with looking polished.

Well I would want to, but then I’d feel guilty for spending my parent’s money on stuff that I do not need when: I can spend $0 on a pair of hand me down shoes that my aunt wore when she was young and lasted me about 3 years…so add the years she wore it and with the 3 and there you go…
And so far my “$12 poor quality slippers” have lasted me about a year now and don’t look a day old almost. Don’t worry I shop smart w/ clearance. I’m a big proponent of purchasing quality items that will last me for a long time and is cheap :D

So…total of $12 = four years…think I’m good :D

@nattilee Yay, I am not strange. Although I wouldn’t label myself a “hippie” either…I just don’t like spending money when I could get stuff cheaper and for the same utility.

Mind if I turn this thread into a discussion about clothing prices?

I never buy anything regular price (unless it’s Forever 21 accessories). I prefer going to higher-end stores and buying things on sale.
I will pay a maximum of $35 on jeans/pants, $15 on a shirt, $35 on a dress, $30 on a pair of shoes.

My favorite outfit:

$250 Armani black dress shirt
$150 Nipponstyle blazer
$40 American Eagle skinny jean (dark)

I like preppy. It’s just that how you wear and how you follow the current trends.

I’d rather look cute and “in” than classic. Might as well embrace new trends when you’re a teen that you won’t be able to pull off as an adult. What happened to clothing being a medium for self-expression? I’d rather not look like a blank canvas 24/7, although preppy pieces serve for good basics, albeit really EXPENSIVE basics.

Never shop preppy unless you’re in an outlet.

To offer some contrast -
My favorite outfit:
Marshall’s $5 belt (which was really $25 before)
Forever 21’s shorts around $5 (love how cheap it was…but then it broke…but then I sewed it back up)
Marshall’s blouse $12.somecents (which was really around $50 before)
My $12 shoes (which were on sale from Marshall’s so from around $60 some bucks)

Jeans/pants $35 w/ you on that one karaoke, $20 on a shirt (so a bit more), $40 for dress (so a bit more), but then $20 for shoes

half-concession: Love preppy…But rather spend under $100 dollars on whole outfit than over 400 bucks…I would die before I spend over $100 for single piece of clothing (100 dollars can feed a family of 5, about 15 times)

It’s interesting though, seeing the differences :D

I’m laughing at this thread, because the vast majority of people I know in college wear jeans & tshirts, and hoodies when it gets cold enough to warrant them.

I go for Nikes and Jordans myself, what in the world is a Sperry? Some kinda moccasin?

^ That’s so real. Sperrys are Topsiders (Boat shoes).

http://www.soccershopusa.com/Images_Products/NikeBenassiSwooshSandals.jpg

wwlink, own a pair of these?

SO comfortable…

Let it be known that the preppy lifestyle does place emphasis on being careful with money [if not necessarily cheap], not buying things that aren’t needed, and using hand-me-downs. I know a lot of preppy people that wear their mom’s/dad’s clothing and this one wicked preppy teacher I had’s favorite Lilly Pulitzer pants were from high school and still looked fantastic. Most preppy people greatly appreciate sales and are generally on the frugal side for how much money they make.

Me, my family’s not preppy in the slightest, but, attending prep school, I’ve found myself quite taken with the preppy “style.” [to be clear: i had no style whatsoever before i came and i was an awkward turtle]. Plus, barring major vertical or horizontal growth, the vast majority of preppy clothes will not go out of style or wear out any time soon, saving me money in the long run.

@Goodbyehello: That’s good then! Yeah the preppy lifestyle is all about being frugal while getting the best quality items. I respect you for that, although I personally would not buy shoes at Marshall’s (have bought belts/ties there before though).

@VengeanceSpirit: That’s NOT preppy, that’s wannabe-Italian model. Back in the day, you could tell someone who had money (TRUE preppy kids have money, hence their origination in prep schools) because they’d wear their dad’s old blazer and khakis/their grandma’s pearls and drive decent cars while the European kids would roll in with your overpriced dress shirts and hop in their German sports cars. Preppy is all about being subtle and diverting attention AWAY from oneself, while your style is about showing off your money. Huge difference. And besides, if you have that much to drop on an Armani button-down, then why are you going to American Eagle for jeans? There are much better places to get jeans from than there, it’s actually my last resort and thankfully haven’t had to use it because sales have been good to me at Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, etc

@Izzy Busy Bee: Hit the nail on the head. Quality defines this style, and although it may seem like you’re dropping a solid amount of money on clothes now, in ten years you can still wear the same things and they’ll look a lot better with the age like Sperrys.

I actually like American Eagle for summer… preppy summer is a little much for me, and i look terrible in polos

@ Izzy Busy Bee!!! hiiiiiiii :)

what do you preppy fashion elitist people think about converse shoes??! personally i really don’t like them…i feel like they look so sloppy. Especially on people that make them look worn out and dirty. I used to be into them when i was in middle school but not so much now. I think the low top ones are fine but i still don’t like them that much :/

what about vineyard vines? Also, I’ve noticed that preppy girls do a good job of making their makeup appear subtle…

and OMG abercrombie & fitch and hollister look super tacky to me…people that still wear a & f stuff look like middle schoolers…like for real.

but then again it’s stupid to judge ppl on what they wear.

I do find prep clothes to be nice and clean, simple, crisp. I like the style, but I don’t wear it because I could never pull it off :|

I’m more of a sweatshirt/sweaters and jeans type of girl … for now.
But once I hit college, I’ll probably spiff up my wardrobe a bit! :)

yeah, the vast majority of a&f and hollister things look really young.
I sincerely hope i’m not coming of as elitist though- i’m certainly far from being rich enough to even be elite! anyway, i think converse is fine in some settings and wouldn’t mind a pair myself.

i like vineyard vines, but at present it’s too expensive. And yeah, a handful of girls at my school wear lots of makeup [and people talk about it]. I don’t actually wear makeup on a regular basis. I mean i have it and i do wear it when i’m feelin it, but that’s like once or twice a week.

i definitely don’t judge people’s clothes provided they’re clean, appropriate and not tacky.

oh, and hi eastafrobeauty
