^Same, I’m not rich by any means but I manage to look “good” because I’m smart about what I buy and when I buy, on great sales. Vineyard Vines literally never goes on sale which I kind of hate because I can get Ralph Lauren for dirt cheap, but I love their stuff because it’s so classic and limited selection (just the basics…they don’t cater to EVERYONE like Ralph Lauren, just those who are going for the sole prep look).

Double thumbs up for preppy style:)

Preppy is certainly the best style for women. Not every preppy girl is gorgeous, but I can’t think of one ugly preppy girl. If done right, at WORST a girl will look decent.

Preppy FTW.

White tee, Jeans, college sweatshirt, and a pair of light colored sneakers is the way to go. Comfy, durable, and looks pretty good.
For fancy events I’ll do the full suit, usually solid color dress shirts, pin-stripe suits, and toned-down ties.
Since I’m in Miami, though, I wear board shorts all the time. Those plus a white tee or a light colored tee are pretty cool. Sandals are nice too, but I sometimes wear a pair of tattered and old sneakers for the beach if I need to walk a while to get to the beach.
I think preppy looks goofy, to be honest. But to each their own, no?

@golfer111:

Like I said, it depends how you wear. There is nothing wrong being frugal and there is nothing wrong being opulent. Do people ever realize that there is an eagle on my black shirt? Not likely. Wearing expensive clothes doesn’t mean that I have no sense on money; it means that I have a willingness to invest for my clothes.

Exactly. Even expensive clothes can look gaudy.

Which is what I was saying earlier about logos. Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, Brooks Brothers etc. all put logos on just about every top they sell. IMO it looks almost as bad as AE, A&F and such.

Well you’re gonna hate me.
Last winter and fall I wore skinny jeans, Converses (Actually American Eagle knock offs for $19), and tee’s or polo’s. The tee’s had my rock bands on them or singers like Kurt Cobain, and they had logo’s like the AE Eagle.

Well, people must automatically assume that I am stupid. Because in a game at my school in Honors Civics where you stand up to guess the answer to a question, (if you get it wrong they get a point), I always was picked first if I stood. I really don’t see why because I got the highest exam grade out of all 4 of her classes, and I ONLY stood when I knew the answer. I am skinny, 5ft 6in, and have semi long dk brwn hair that girls seem to adore. They even picked me when I wore my tan shorts, Sperry’s, and Polo’s!

I don’t really have a preference, I just have my own unique style. The teachers seem to like it more when you wear things like Polo’s and Sperry’s, but I have never really left my surf style over the years. I like the puca shell necklaces, the bright colored rubber flip flops, the thin tee’s that keep me cool in the Summertime, and the shorts. Wearing them now. Although I did like the skinny jeans because they hugged me and made me feel better somehow. I just always incorporate the surf theme into my style in some way.

Even though I live in hick-ville… :D

P.S. And I NEVER pay more than $15 for a shirt, shorts, flip flops, or jeans. Only my parents do. I save my $.

The best thing about preppy style: it’s EASY to get cheap, it lasts foreverrr, it’s flattering on a LOT of people, and it can be really fun!

Somedays I go ultra preppy, with RL polo dresses and such (BIG headband fanatic here). I DONT LIKE TO WEAR PANTS(haha) so in the winter I usually shy away from polos and such(I get cool tunics or big sweaters from thrift stores, which I can wear with wellies, ankle boots(my favorite ankle boots being cowboy boots from the 70s) or oxfords, along with warm leggings), but my outerwear could be considered preppy(I have five RL peacoats in different colors). I buy a lot of preppy stuff thrift actually (I get lacoste/ RL polos/shorts/ dresses all the time there), and in the summer I tend to play up the prep with polos and high waisted bright shorts (I have yellow, pink, blue, and striped). like to mix preppy with hipster sometimes: I’ll wear bright pink RL shorts with a structured hipster, shoulder-padded jacket. BELTS are essential, and you can get HIGH quality ones thrift(which I do), as well as bags(I love satchels, because theyre SO convenient) I think I like some trends I see, so I’ll follow those to a tee, but I usually bring my own style(rompers are awesome, but can be hard for some to pull off). I focus on COMFORT(hence my aversion to pants), and people tend to like how I dress–I’m not a fan of underwear-shorts.

As to MAKEUP- girls at my school use the cake face method…nasty. PREPPY MAKEUP IS THE BEST. if you wear foundation, it has to be PERFECT(primer or tinted moisturizer is preferable because its lighter. lip gloss and mascara are all you need, but no matter how much you wear the key is to LOOK like its nothing.

Accessories are key: i’ve mentioned headbands(LOVE LOVE LOVE). rings, bracelets, and earrings are also necessary(for earrings I tend to stick to my pearls(real), I have large ones and tiny ones).
I spend real money on jeans(because you NEED to…cheap jeans are NOTHING like the real deal)

I never knew people took ‘dressing preppy’ so seriously! I own 3 pairs of Sperrys, love Ralph Lauren, and have my fair share of preppy clothes and such but a lot of the time I just chill in cute jeans and a college hoodie… I will admit that preppy clothing are timeless and the ‘safest’ route for interviews, etc: you can’t go wrong with it! (Except for clubs, etc but that’s besides the point…)

preppy is timeless fashion.

that is all.

Very true. Cake face looks like plastic surgery lite. Its cousin, the bright red lipstick/very noticeable black eyeshadow combo, makes you look like a vampire raccoon.

This thread is soooo preppy…

True, true. Polished-looking guys are so much more attractive. Same with girls, I would assume.

Just out of curiosity, what activities do you find preppy? The stereotype is the preppy b**** who is a cheerleader and has a handsome, rich, football player boyfriend, at least where I live in California. People always consider brands like Juicy Couture preppy in my school, and it gets really annoying! Preppy is more about being polished and classy.

I consider myself a prep- I play golf, my favorite shoes are my sperry’s, and I always wear pencil skirts or cute capris and Ralph Lauren sweaters. :)

I don’t imagine cheerleaders, football, or juicy couture as preppy at all.

And cardigans. Neutral or earthy colors are a must. I would also say little metallic or harsh glittery stuff in the outfit as a whole.

Tennis? Badminton? Dare I say ping pong as well? And swimming, possibly.

Tennis and Field Hockey.
Oh, and golf.

I’ll just stay classic. Heyyyyy.

Preppy girls at my school have straightened or curled hair, natural looking makeup, and solid colored clothes. Some girls wear headbands in their hair, some don’t.

I, as a girl, like preppy guys. All of the guys I’ve liked since I started high school dress the way the OP described. I’m not a “looks” snob, and I need to like a person’s personality before I like them.

Also, most guys who dress nicely, have “better/higher paying” jobs. Most of these jobs are in the business, law, or science fields. Why? Many say that if you’re someone who takes care of yourself and your appearance without going overboard, you’re likely to put that same level or caring/effort into the work you do.
