I received my bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in May '15. I have been working as an engineer for almost a year now but I am looking to go back to school with goals of attending medical school. I have about half of my prerequisites completed but need to take 6 more courses(and labs). If I take these courses at a community school will this hurt my chances of being accepted to medical school?
There are some medical schools that won’t accept pre-reqs done at community college or only will accepted a limited number of credits (usually no more than 8 credits) from community college. You need to consult MSAR or email those medical schools you’re most interested in applying to for specifics.
Assuming that your GPA and sGPA from your undergrad is strong (think around 3.7 or so), then taking your pre-reqs at a CC should not be a red flag issue.
Note that you will probably need to take biochemistry at 4 year college since that course is not typically offered at community colleges.
If you haven’t already started clinical volunteering, shadowing and community service activities, you need to get involved doing those ASAP. ECs are just as important as grades & your MCAT score for medical school admission.
