I'm an incoming freshman boarder at Westover (a small, all girls, and lesser known compared to many of the other schools on here) and was just invited to preseason. I hope to play field hockey in the fall, but not on the varsity level. So, anyway, typically do a lot of freshman go to preseason? I'm from the south and don't know anyone at Westover, so I guise what I'm trying to figure out is: Do a lot of Freshman go to preseason? Is it only for the very skilled athletes?
Also this is a totally general question, I'm just a nervous freshman, so any info on how preseason works (doesn't matter what school) would be incredibly helpful!

Wl I don’t know for sure, but I assume you are supposed to attend preseason, unless you live really far away from the boarding school before the yeatr starts…and yes freshman do attend preseason

If you are asked to play pre season, GO! It means the coach shows interest in you. Even if you are an underdog, it’s a great experience, and you can meet the coaches early on to establish a good relationship

I also was invited for preseason as a freshman this year, and I’m not doing it to try to make varsity, just to meet new people and find out how the program works. I would go if I were you, it will be worth it. A few of my friends are going to Westover next year btw ;)

As noted, if you are invited, you should go if you can —*the only exception I’d say is if you live far enough that you’re flying to school and you already have tix bought. At most schools (and I’m thinking of larger, co-ed schools here), I’d think only recruited or star frosh get invited to pre.

Another case to beg off is if your parents want to come to move-in (to meet other parents and attend the parent orientation sessions) and only have resources/vacation time to go once at the beginning of school year.

Have a great first year at Westover and be sure to represent your school here on the board so that it isn’t a “lesser known” school here anymore!

My daughter is an incoming tenth grader at an ISL school and was invited for preseason, but the camp is held at a college for four days in Mid August and includes a bunch (6-7?) of ISL schools, not only hers. I think they mix up the teams.
Preseason is no guarantee of making varsity, as they tell you, but it does show initiative and lets the coach see you play. For this camp I asked who was attending from our school and was told it’s about 10 varsity players and some of the better JV. I didn’t get the impression that freshmen were going, but preparation for the season no matter what team you end up on. It’s definitely nice to arrive at school knowing other people who play your sport.
According to the information I have, a “typical day” starts at 7:30 breakfast.
There is a fitness option for an hour, followed by 1 1/2 hours of practice. Then there is lunch, another 1 1/2 hour practice session, a second one-hour fitness option and a break at 3:00 followed by dinner. At 6:00 there is pre game warm up, followed by two 40-minute games. At 8:30 there is a “team activity” for an hour and dorm check in at 10:30.
Al I can say is, “arrive fit.” If you were invited, definitely go if you can. Hope this helps!

And PS my daughter plays defense so she’s not one of the “high scoring superstars” you see out there.
