i was just wondering if there are alot of oral presentations in college.
i personally hate them and wouldn't mind if i never had to do them again after high school.
How are the classes taught? like in a english class. Are they all in big lecture halls?

my major had to do formal presentations in front of ceo's of companies - and that wasn't even a senior level course. I had multiple presentations in pretty much every class.

bump......

I've had to do a few presentations. I had one in my "scientific writing" english class - it was about 30 people in a computer lab & we had to make a power-point presentation in groups of 4 and then present it infront of the class. Then I had another presentation in a design class I took (big lecture hall), my group of about 10 students did a skit and somehow I got the lead part. Then I've also done some presentations at research conferences. In high school I HATED public speaking. Getting up infront of my peers terrified me and I'd freeze up & studder & it was horrible. But, sometimes you just have to get over yourself and realize that your peers in your college classes probably don't even know your name, and they could care less about how your presentation goes.

Not all classes are in large lecture halls. The general lower division courses are usually in huge lecture halls (400 people), but as you get further into your major the class sizes get much smaller. In an ochem lab of mine (as a chem major) we only had 12 students.

most classes don't involve oral presentations

i seriously don't know if i've ever had a class that didn't involve a presentation. We even had them in biology and history classes. and economics. and accounting. and art.

In my experience, there were a number of oral presentations required in college. They seemed to increase as I got into my major classes. (Don't forget that many schools have public speaking as a requirement in their core.) I suppose it depends on the major as to just how many you'll have. However, don't look at them as torture. Look at them as opportunity. Chances are you'll have to speak in front of people in whatever career you choose. It's a lot easier to mess up in front of a dozen of your peers than in front of your boss or competitors.

i require an oral presentation every class every semester. i don't expect much--i mostly teach introductory courses, but i do force them to get in front of people and speak...it's a skill you need for life

I don't have any classes this quarter that require oral presentations (i'm taking science/math classes, orgo/physics/linear alg) - except for music, where we'll have to perform a piece we've written as our final project.

most math classes will not involve presentations, and science classes with 200 people don't have presentations.

Well, not actual presentations. I don't consider talking for 2-3 minutes really a presentation (as in, give the class an overview of your research paper). I mean, 200 students times 5 minutes is 1000 minutes, divided by 50 minutes per class is 20 class periods for everyone to give a presentation. That's over a month and a half of class to do just the presentations. It just can't be done.

I'm in my 3rd semester, and I've only given one, and it was in Spanish.

i see...looks like presentations are pretty rare in college
and most of them sound pretty small and easy

what about in English classes freshman year?

Got a 20 minute presentation in 2 weeks or so.... Freak out period begins, now.
