How do you apply for the Presidential Honors Scholars Program in the College of Arts and Science?

any help appreciated!

Hi!

I got accepted to this program before declining my spot at NYU so I know a fair bit about it.
As for your question, the answer is that you cannot directly apply into the program; rather, everyone who applies to NYU is considered for it. The top 5% of the entering class is given the honor- which also means that when someone like me declined my spot, the spot in the program moved on to the next person in the list. Hope that helped!

katzly…if you dont mind what were your stats?

I’m in the program. I applied as a sophomore. If you weren’t already accepted as a freshman, you can’t be in it until you’re a sophomore. The application comes out in the spring of your freshman year. I think it was around April.

The people who get accepted as freshmen without applying are in the top percentile of their high school graduating class, so don’t feel badly about not getting in. For example, if the percentile was top 10% (I’m not actually sure what it is), then anyone in the top 10% of a small rural school of 100 people who is attending NYU would get accepted. This school could have no APs, no tough competition, and easy classes. At the same time, anyone in the top 10% of a large, highly competitive private school of 2,000 people who is attending NYU would also get accepted. This high school could’ve had extremely difficult college-style classes and APs on every subject. So there’s a huge range of people who get accepted as freshmen, from those who probably don’t deserve to be designated as honors students to the best of the best.

It’s not exactly difficult to stay in the program once you’re in it, though, although many people do drop the program eventually as there aren’t really any benefits besides the freshmen and sophomore trips. I also found the application rather easy - it’s an essay and a recommendation, and a few short answers. Just keep your GPA up and you’ll be fine.

Actually ashleykingsley, that can’t be right because there was no way I was in the top decile of my graduating class. The mean GPA was higher than mine, automatically putting me in the bottom 50% of the class. My high school is highly competitive and a public magnet in New York City… all classes are at least honors-level. About 30 people apply to NYU every year and around 20 or so usually get accepted. Most of my classmates and I considered it a “safety” school.

My stats are ~3.6 GPA with a 2330 SAT. Hope that helps!

D got into Steinhardt Scholars which is a similar program for Steinhardt students. She was not in her top decile for her school. I think getting into scholars is much more holistic than that.
