Presidential Honors Scholars Program 2010

I just got an invite to join the College of Arts and Science's Presidential Honors Scholars Program!! Did anyone else get this??

Just barely? How, email, snail mail? What is it?

My D just got her invitation via snail mail today.

I got the letter today too… hours after I mailed out the admissions reply that said I wouldn’t be attending (because there’s no way I could afford it). Is there a separate scholarship that comes with presidential honors? If so is there any way NYU would let me reconsider my decision? I never expected to be in this situation, although I’m very excited to have gotten the invitation. I have a feeling that my scholarship will not increase just because I know NYU’s not big on giving out a lot of money but I also don’t know much about the Presidential Honors Program either

congratulations to anyone who received the letter! Mine came in the mail today, and I’m in CT so who knows if there are still more out there

snail mail…
and i do believe that it comes with some form of merit aid, but i am not sure how much. there is no indication of how much aid i will be receiving in the letter.

I haven’t gotten anything. What were the criteria? Was it based on gpa/SAT/etc?

here is what it says on the NYU website about the program:

Presidential Honors Scholars

(The top five percent of the entering class is invited to join; students may also apply for entry after they have matriculated, having demonstrated superlative academic achievement and a consistent record of leadership and service to the community.)

* receive special advising from College faculty and staff,

  • challenge themselves in honors courses and through independent research,
  • study abroad,
  • take advantage of New York City’s cultural resources, and
develop leadership skills through community service.

Activities include:

* Scholars Lecture Series

  • cultural events in the city
  • community service projects
  • Freshman Honors Seminar
  • study abroad intersession trips

Scholars admitted as freshmen directly from high school receive financial assistance in the form of a scholarship. Membership in the Scholars Program is renewable annually, depending on the quality of the scholar’s academic records and his or her level of participation in the program. All scholars are expected to be full-time students and maintain a grade point average of at least 3.65.

Students interested in joining the program have the opportunity to apply in the spring term prior to their sophomore year. Applications are available in the Dean’s office, room 909, Silver Center each year after spring break.

Where do you all live? I guess I shouldn’t get my hopes up too high, I doubt I’m top 5%

Here’s our situation:
Acceptance letter Apr 1, No mention of any merit scholarship. FA award $5.500 Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Load and $50,566 Direct Plus Loan. Ha, what a joke! We are a middle class family with both parents working full time. Too much money to qualify for a decent need based FA package and too poor to take on $200,000++ on in debt.
The plot thickens; invitation to join the College of Arts and Science’s Presidential Honors Scholars Program Apr 13, no mention of any merit award.
However as in the above post “Scholars admitted as freshmen directly from high school receive financial aid in the form of a scholarship”.
My D’s top 4 choices to which she got accepted at this point are NYU, Emory (did not make Emory Scholars), UCLA and UF(accepted into honors program; not much of a program, and received the out of state Presidential Scholarship totaling $24,000 over 4 years). Financially, our smart choices would be UCLA (in state tuition) or UF, but she loves NYU and Emory and can play soccer at both.
Soooo, does anyone know how much the scholarship is??? According to NYU’s web site we should be getting some merit money, don’t you think?

Okay, i’ve read all the related posts from previous years below with no definitive answer to receiving a Presidential Honor Scholars Scholarship if you have not received any other merit based scholarship. Seens like all others received a CAS or other merit based scholarship in their FA package. Must be urban myth???

I’m also in this strange limbo…Did I get a scholarship? Did I not get a scholarship…?
My fin aid package is roughly 25,000 grant, 25,000 loans, but that is signifcantly lower than what I have gotten at other schools (high need, four kids in school at once!). Regardless, there is no mention of a scholarship in my package. I though the grant was just need based: it says “NYU Grant,” not “CAS scholarship.” This is just really frustrating/confusing…I mean, we all could have committed to other schools at this point, like artnyc. I’ll call fin aid on Monday…relay anything useful back to this thread

Have you guys enrolled already?

No, waiting to hear scholarship award amount if any. I have a sinking feeling it may be need based.

Did the envelope come in a small envelope? Did you guys get it with the financial aid envelope that came?

Small white envelope. Received FA letter with acceptance letter Apr 1.

No, not that envelope that came on April 1st. There was another envelope that came regarding FA like 5 days ago… Did it come in that?

No, came on Friday seperately in a small white envelope with NO FA letter.

I’m currently a student in the CAS Presidential Scholars Program. Any FA amount will be in the FA letter. If you get into the Scholars program after your acceptance packet went out, it will most likely not change your FA award, but you can always try to get more… (I was invited in a letter that cam the same day as the acceptance packet, by the way)

On another note, the Scholars program is awesome, and I highly suggest you take a serious look at it, especially if you want to go to a graduate school that focuses on research. It also “forces” you to become well-rounded, which is good if you are very focused on a single major or something along those lines.

cccollege2345

The program does look awesome, but is it worth $200,000+? So, how much was your scholarship? Would you have gone if you had to pay in full (loans. etc.)?

Well, just got off the phone with FA office. No merit scholarship offered with the Presidential Honors Scholars Program; need based only. Sucks to be middle class and smart. We probably won’t accept the invitation only because we can’t afford NYU.
