Presidential Scholars

Do you have to be a National Merit Finalist to be accepted into the Presidential Scholars program??

Well, the site says -

Presidential Honors Scholars Program
The College of Arts and Science offers scholarships to outstanding freshmen (approximately the top five percent of the entering class) who have demonstrated superior academic achievement and outstanding records of leadership and service to their school and community. Presidential Honors Scholars participate in Scholars Seminars, meet regularly for lectures and discussions, and engage in a wide variety of co-curricular activities, including the Scholars Lecture Series, cultural events in new York City, social events, and community service projects. Scholars are also expected to complete the honors track in their major. During the January intersession, freshman and sophomore scholars participate in a study abroad trip. During their junior or senior year, scholars are expected to study abroad for an entire term.

i know that, but i just got a letter about the presidential scholars program saying you're eligible if you're a national merit finalist. but idk if that means only national merit finalists can get the scholarship

No. I was a National Merit commended student out of high school but I was accepted into the Presidential Honors Program.

Regarding NMF and NYU merit scholarships -- It is possible to gain maximum merit scholarships without NMF status, even as a commended student.

okay thank you for clearing that up!

Yeah, I'm not even a commended National Merit student, or anything special like that. Even without it I've been invited to join the D.E.A.N presidential scholars, which seems to be very much the same as presidential scholars except with a few more benifits.

You must be wonderful in some way - and should feel proud!!

There's no reason to be sarcastic like that, I only answered the person's question by using an actual example instead of merely quoting the website.

DublinDoogey - I don't know if you were addressing your remark to me, but if so, please note that I wasn't being sarcastic at all. I really do think you must be wonderful in some way. I really do think you should be proud of yourself. I said to you what I would say to my own child were she to receive such a fabulous scholarship.

So...I have another question about this scholarship. Last week I received the "Sunday at the Square" invitation for the CAS--a pleasant, if odd, surprise. Today I got the letter that I believe some others have received, about the Presidential Honors Scholar program and sending in your distinction as NMF (I am a NMF). Anyway, the first time I read the letter I thought that it was simply a reminder to send in the info to make myself eligible for some part of the scholarship. However, upon re-reading the letter, it seems to imply that I will be offered a scholarship--the last line reads, "We look forward to welcoming you as a Presidential Honors Scholar in September!" Am I reading too much into this line? What does it mean? Obviously, I will be sure to fax them a copy of my certificate (which I don't presently have in my possession...yay for uncaring public schools!), but I am confused by this last line and would appreciate some clarification.

Sorry to bother you guys... I am a National Merit Finalist too, they sent me a letter saying that if I send in a copy of my Finalist certificate, I will recieve a invite for the Presidential honors thing... Could someone clarify this? They all seemed to say that I will get accepted into the honors just by sending in my certificate... is that a gross misinterpretation? Thanks everyone!!!

so if I was commended, how do I get the scholarship? I don't have a certificate or anything of that sort, but I kind of always just assumed I was commended because my school told me I was a top scorer, but I didn't make it to semis..

Do you folks who were informed about the scholarships told how much $ is involved? Have you gotten financial aid packages yet?

momfromme, sorry about the quick accusation, it sounded slightly sarcastic, but mostly because of the history of people's replys when I've put things like that up in the forums. People seem to not like it when they're told that you don't 100% SAT IIs or NMF and stuff like that.

I have not yet receieved my financial aid package, just the information about the scholarship and the 25-27 visit.
I'm guessing that within the next week or so we will, because they seem to be putting together lots of stuff for these weekends at the end of March, and then once those are complete they'll throw the rest of the stuff in the mail.

hmmm... didn' the letter say a min of 10,000 for the presidential scholars... could someone please clarify? I'm really confused (see my last post)
Thanks ahead of time...
