@collegedreamer1, good catch!
If the FAQ are the most accurate (which they usually are), the What to Expect section is misleading: “A full scholarship* covering tuition, mandatory fees, housing, and meal plan.” The asterisk referring to the Stamps benefits below doesn’t help clarify that “full scholarship” for OOS only means OOS portion of tuition.
“*Stamps Leadership Scholars receive a “full ride” President’s Scholarship, which includes books, premium housing after their first year, and personal expenses as well as $15,000 in enrichment funds for international study, research, or unpaid internship experiences.”
The President’s Scholarship does pay full tuition, even for oos. The Stamps “full ride” includes more money for housing (premium vs. base), books, personal expenses, and money for travel/research
It seems odd that Pres scholar candidates are the “top” percentage of admitted students but that they don’t get provosts? From the letter it sounds like they picked fewer semi-finalists this year than normal so hopefully everyone will get some $$ esp important for OOS. Not finding out until mid-April though puts GT at a huge disadvantage. The mandatory on campus interview is the same weekend as admitted student weekend at MIT. I would hate to pass that up for a maybe scholarship when without it one would probably choose MIT.
A Provost thread from a previous year inferred that the Provost Scholarship might be given primarily to high-achieving URM OOS applicants.
When does the notice for Provost winners go out? It seems GT has not announced that yet? For @dcplanner. Visit MIT another weekend. There is no reason to let MIT market to you, go to MIT on your own and ask good questions. These visit programs are designed to get kids to say yes. Its always better to poke around at a university and find out the real story. Visit programs are misleading in some ways, its very rosy. MIT and any university has non rosy aspects that can be better discerned on a random visit. But yes, the visit program is like “camp” and “fun”. Forget that, ask good questions and you will make a good decision for yourself. Talk to student at the cafeterias and walk around university cafeterias and you will find out a lot more that way. You already know MIT professors and programs are strong, thats not want you are after, you are after other questions that only you can formulate. Don’t let visit programs distract you. Good luck.
@dcplanner I feel you man
We have visited MIT but some of the same doubts exist about MIT as GT (basically too many engineers and engineering focus for a computer science/math focused kid). Having the fun experience and talking to other accepted students is an important factor for my son in determining fit. A few more months of thought and looking very specifically at courses may make a difference but an earlier date for Presidential weekend would be infinitely better for a number of reasons. You’d think they’d want to get these kids really really excited about GT before the April 1 elite school acceptances start rolling in…

As far as I know finalists for the Presidential are guaranteed at least the equivalent of a Provost. And this year there are only a 100 finalists.
