Presidential Scholarship - What are They Looking For

My daughter was accepted into the Honor’s program because of her NMF status but was also planning to apply for the Presidential Scholarship. I’m thinking it may be a waste of time, as she’s the epitome of the “average excellent” kid as described in CC. Are they looking for change agents, community organizers, and others with more high-profile ECs? (This seems to be the ticket from looking at bios from similar scholarships, such as Parks.) Does a student with top scores and grades, but typical ECs (work, team captain, varsity/club swimmer, club officer) have a realistic shot?

Her main goal in applying is that she’s looking for a more personal learning experience where she has as many opportunities as possible. She does not feel like a large state school is the right fit for her but we may not be able to afford the smaller schools she’d prefer.

She’s so burned out on essays, but she’s wants to take a shot if there’s more any sort of realistic chance. Any insights are appreciated!

Pretty much this. By way of example, in addition to high scores and grades my son in HS produced and directed a musical that performed at numerous retirement homes and raised money for the American Cancer Society. He was also a talented singer who received large talent scholarships for vocal performance/opera at a number of other schools. One of his fellow Presidential Scholars tours the country giving speeches about her family’s experiences dealing with a sibling’s disability.

But I happen to think the honors program is worth the essays even if you don’t get Presidential. The honors dorm alone is worth it.

Thanks vistajay. She was already accepted into the Honor’s program with NMF scholarship. Otherwise, she would definitely do it! If she wants to go for it, more power to her…but I’m going to encourage her to enjoy her weekend.
