Presidential Scholarship

Hey guys! I am an out of state student who got accepted to Honors but not to the Banneker Key. I really am depending on hopefully the Presidential to come through and give me some money because there is no school that I love more than Maryland. Is there any idea when these decisions might come out or what the possibilities are for Honors OOS to get money? Any comments would be great.

Being in Honors does not guarantee merit money to be received. I am in the same boat as you - Honors OOS. While we do have a good shot, there have been many people who did not receive merit money for whatever reason.

An admissions officer told me mid to late March is when we should expect to hear back. I think past years have shown they come a bit earlier than that, so possibly soon.

Wow, that’s so late. I thought I saw where the Presidential money came out the last week of February last year. Fingers crossed for that.

Yeah, that’s what I saw from past threads. I’m hoping that admissions person is wrong.

Two years ago, I was told that the merit scholarship letters are sent out in batches and the last batch was expected to go out on March 15 (again this was two years ago). S received the Presidential Scholarship letter a couple days after that. So, don’t give up your hope. Good luck.

I can"t see how Presidential Scholarship letters can come out before b/k interviews and decisions.

,

Bonee26, I don’t see why they wouldn’t be. They come out in waves, so those who wee not nominated for B/K and we’re awarded the presidential scholarship instead may find out first.

My take and I hope that I am wrong is that they are decreasing the number of scholarships. Last year UMD had three B/K dates with approx 125 interviews which equals 375 scholarships, half getting full rides and half getting the equivalent of a Presidential Scholarship. This year there were only two b/k dates and from the information I was able to get the number of interviewees did not increase. I fear a trickle down effect into the number of scholarships provided. Especially for OOS candidates.

@Bonee26, while I could, of course, be mistaken, I remember hearing that anyone who actually interviews for B/K will get an award of some sort, whether it is a full B/K or a partial B/K. So, while technically a partial B/K award is roughly the same as the highest level of a Presidential award, it is still called a partial B/K, not a Presidential.

Thus, it is not only possible for Presidential awards to come out first, but it is probable since the candidates are not coming from the same pool. There is no interview process for Presidential so there is no reason to hold up the awards, per se. The B/K candidates have already been designated for a form of B/K, not Presidential, from what I understand.

In 2012, my son’s letter notifying him of a Presidential award was dated February 21st (although we likely received the actual letter after that date due to snail mail), which was before all the of the B/K interviews had taken place.

Best of luck to everyone - hoping you hear soon!

@bonee26
My interview date for B/K is March 5th. Other dates mentioned so far are February 25th and March 3rd, so three B/K dates this year as well.

Is it possible to receive a Presidential award if one was admitted to Scholars, or is that open to Honors kids only?

@sschickens
Yes, it’s possible. Being in Honors doesn’t even guarantee anything. Some Honors kids in the past have received no scholarships.

@sschickens - Yes, my son is in Scholars and got a Presidential as did several of his friends in Scholars

@maryversity If you don’t mind me asking, how much did your son receive?

Thanks, Jibler and Maryversity. Were are in-state, and my D received a $5k academic achievement scholarship from St. Mary’s. I was curious to know if she had a chance to receive any merit from UMD-CP as well. I guess we’ll see. Thanks, again.

@sschickens - when S2 was going thru this, he got 8500/yr for 4 years from SM and 8/yr for 4 years from UMD (Presidential). We are IS.

Good to hear, FromMD, and thanks. Just curious, where did D2 end up?

S2 is at UMD just like S1 was - both Honors/Gems. S1 got a B/K but S2 didn’t get the invite. He considered SM briefly but not seriously. The school seemed “too relaxed” for him. Good luck.

I was accepted into Scholars and hoping for a scholaship! I was wondering how much is given through the presidential scholarship? thanks:)

@heycall123 It depends. Based on past threads, it seems to be from 2000/year to 8000/year for in-state, and up to 12k/year out-of-state.
