President's oldest in the college search mode

is her hook that she is an URM?

I think her primary “hook” is being the daughter of a US President. What other hook does ANY kid need?

“She should write her essay about how her Dad promised her a puppy, and then he named it with his own initials.”

Oh good grief. Get a freakin’ grip. Careful, your agenda is showing…

@LucieTheLakie‌ I was being sarcastic

“I like to think that I would have the interests of the school and the other students in mind.”

That’s just stupid. The Obamas should be looking for academic interest and fit just like any other parent helping a child select a college. And then, deal with whatever security issues are necessary. Presidential kids and other famous kids have gone both to big-name and no-name colleges; it’s all doable.

I do think a women’s college would be an interesting selection, though you can imagine how wild the Right would go over it.

An HBCU would also be an interesting selection.

The last can be illegal for the other person having sex with the 16-year old, depending on the age of the other person and the state law on age of consent.

Can you imagine being the adcom that rejected a sitting POTUS kid? LOL
I do think it’s tough in a way for kids of really powerful people to come out from under the shadow of their parents. I wish her luck.

Re: Malia: I would NOT want to be in the middle of nowhere where I’m the big news in town. Lots of celebrities say that the place they are most anonymous and free to go about their business is Manhattan, followed by West LA. There are countless important people there, and it’s part of the culture that everyone pretends to be way too cool to be impressed that Uma Thurman is next to them at Starbucks. (They are actually thrilled and texting all their friends, but won’t ask for an autograph.) People at Harvard resolutely left Natalie Portman alone, even though we were totally giddy when we spotted her.

“Especially the type of school she will get to choose from…it is not like those schools need free advertising.”

Topic detour: That’s not how they view it. From the point of view of HYPS’s leadership, they’re stewards of priceless traditions, and their job is to maintain that status against ferocious competition. Harvard CARED when they lost Chelsea to Stanford. Rankings and eliteness do change over time. Stanford wasn’t part of this conversation in the 1930s. Schools like Wash U, NYU, and Chicago are pouring money and effort into snapping at their heels. Harvard can’t count on being Harvard forever if it gets complacent. Think about the British Empire, the railroads, etc. that were going to run the world forever.

It’s like saying Coca-Cola doesn’t need advertising. In the short term, they don’t. But you don’t stay #1 for 100 years without working to stay ahead of hungry competitors. They have to have teams of experts sweating to stay where they are as the world changes around them.

I like the idea of her applying under a pseudonym

I doubt she’d come to Columbia. President Obama didn’t have the best time here.

But the idea that studying in Manhattan would be impossible to manage is ridiculous. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of celebrities that live in Manhattan and several famous students have gone to either Columbia or NYU. The Olsen twins were at NYU for a while, for example.

As for HBCUs, my alma mater (Spelman) is probably fruitlessly hoping…lol.

Not knowing her but only knowing the little bit of her public persona that’s shown through, I agree with the folks who said they see her at a small LAC. But that’s probably bias since I went to one, lol.

I don’t even think the term "hook " applies here. This is such an exclusive situation that it would need to be handled in an entirely different way.

The Obama girls are born to highly educated parents, and have access to excellent education. Academically, I expect them to look very similar to top applicants who get accepted to elite schools and to do very well in college.

In other aspects, there would be privacy and security issues. The kind of personal information on an a college application would need to be highly guarded. Their grades, scores, essays and recommendations should not leak out to the press. Like any other teen- they could have a bad day, not do as well as usual on a test. They might have a crush on someone, disagree with a room mate- just about any typical college situation could happen with the girls that could feed the tabloids.

For this reason, I’d be willing to bet that they will fill out the Common App, but it may be submitted with different security. They won’t go through a random room mate match or hall assignment. They deserve to have as normal a college life as possible, but for this to happen, I guess that some extraordinary steps will be made to guard their privacy.

I don’t expect to hear much about their college days. They seem like studious kids who aren’t into extreme behavior. The tabloids will find plenty of other things to focus on.

Wesleyan is a top school for film. Maybe she’ll consider it.

It’s hideous that a teenage girl’s family has to worry about security. I hope it can be managed safely and unobtrusively for her.

I agree, it’s worked before, hopefully it’ll work again

@AmbiD77, sarcasm is usually intended to convey scorn. Not sure if yours is directed at Malia or the process in general.

"For this reason, I’d be willing to bet that they will fill out the Common App, but it may be submitted with different security. They won’t go through a random room mate match or hall assignment. "

FWIW, I know someone who roomed with Jodie Foster at Yale, during the John Hinckley stalking and subsequent trial. They were matched randomly / the normal way.

How far into GWB’s presidency did his daughters go off to Yale and UT?

Exactly. This is hardly the first time the kid of a well-known person or even a president has gone to college. Madonnas’s daughter is entering UMich this year. Isn’t Madonna more famous than the Obama’s? Maybe, it’s just me.

@LucieTheLakie‌ how about neither? It was a joke, take things lightly.

It isn’t the first time a famous child has gone to college, but I worry about privacy leaks with social media in modern times. Everything seems to end up on the internet.

On the other hand, the tabloids love drama, and I think they will find it somewhere else. It seems like the celebrity kids who go to college are focused on academics.

I agree. For all those saying, Jodi Foster/Madonna’s daughter or even Amy Carter went to college without a problem, so what’s the problem with Malia?

The problem is the unbelievable hatred directed at President Obama - and his family. Do you think there are many websites devoted to spewing hatred on Jodi Foster and declaring her an enemy of this country or someone who wants to institute death panels? This has nothing to do with whether one agrees or disagrees with Obama’s politics. It’s the unhinged ranting and hatred that is going to be a special problem for Malia and Sasha.

I hope both of them can go to a college that’s right for them. I hope they can have a relatively normal, happy college experience. But it’s not going to be the same as any other random celebrity’s kid going to college. And imagine Malia’s first term - Fall 2016, during the end of the next presidential election season. People’s emotions will be sky high. Republicans will be decrying the past eight years and how they have to be elected to save this country from doom. The usual election bs. But a heck of a time for her to start college.

GWB was elected in November of 2000. At that point, Jenna and Barbara were already college freshmen.
