I was just wondering how well know Pratt really is. I live in the midwest and I had never really heard of Pratt, but I have heard of RISD, Parsons, etc. How prestigious is Pratt? I don't want to go here and have to constantly tell everyone its not a school for slacker art students.

Your concern is totally misplaced. Pratt is at least as well known, and at least as well respected as Parsons. In fact it has stronger programs on the whole than Parsons, based on national rankings of MFA program (harder to come by rankings of BFA programs). If you were to graduate from Pratt you'd never have to explain to anybody that it's not a school for slackers. It would help to open doors to a career. (I live in Michigan -- and my daughter is an artist. Pratt was known to my daughter as a serious place for education in art.)

I live in Connecticut and my daughter is interested in Pratt. I can tell you that all of her art teachers both in and out of school have been very complimentary about the school and it's programs. I have been reading their live journal for the past month of so to get a feel for the students and what was going on at the school. I recently posted there myself and asked some questions about the program. The students (at least the one's that posted there) were incredibly kind and helpful. I also got the feeling from reading the posts between students that they were willing to help each other out. I don't know about other schools having this kind of live journal but I feel that I learned more about the school and it's programs in a few days than in months reading other information.
