For those of you in China/Korea/Japan/India/Singapore/Hong Kong/Tai Wan/Malaysia, can you please tell me how prestigious or well-known the "Seven Sisters" are?

In particular, how do the reputations of Wellesley/MHC/Smith compare?

Also, is it true that Barnard, Bryn Mawr and Vassar are less well-known in these Asian countries? Thanks! :)

They aren't very well-known at all in India -- a few people have heard of Wellesley, but definitely not the rest; it definitely seems to be the most well-known, at any rate.

In Korea, to the average people, they aren't well known.
To the average employers, they aren't well known.
To the employers of prestigious companies, they are known, but job applicants with a degree from these colleges do not fare well in the selection processes because they just hold undergrad degrees; an average job applicant at prestigious companies would have something much greater than a bachelors degree.

Vassar is not part of the "Seven Sisters".
Vassar was one of the top "Seven Sisters" colleges till Vassar refused an offer to merge with Yale University and decided to turn completely independent and co-ed in 1969.

Not even HYPSM. I know people who've asked me what Stanford is, and just this morning someone asked me what 'MIT' stood for. Parochial much?

I hadn't heard of the Seven Sisters until someone mentioned them in a movie. But that's probably
coz I'm interested mostly in engineering schools.

BTW, 800th post! W00T! :)

EDIT: I've heard some pretty comical pronunciations of "Massachusetts".

You should've said Manipal Institute of Tech., Noldo :). Jeez.

I haven't told a lot of people that I'm applying to the US, so I haven't been exposed to a lot of.. um.. viewpoints? But yeah, US universities have very low recognition among people here.

I hate people's reactions when I say "Colgate".

Among academics and those who attended elite schools in the US, the Seven Sister schools are held in high-esteem; however, most US citizens haven't heard of them. It should be no surprise that, internationally, they aren't known at all.

If you want to remain in the US or continue on to grad school in the US, the Seven Sisters (rather, the five remaining Seven Sisters plus Vassar) are an excellent choice. If you are after an excellent education, again, they are a great choice. However, if you want people in your home country to admire where you are going to college, then you should look elsewhere.

Many people have heard of Wellesley, mostly because of Hillary Clinton I guess. The other colleges are not widely known. BTW, generally speaking, American LACs are not well-known overseas and most internationals consider them to offer an inferior education compared to large research universities.
