Prestige: UCB/UCLA Sociology?

I don’t believe this. They’re going to look at your cover letter before they look at where you went for undergrad. It’s about fit and qualification, not prestige and qualification.

Ciaokarol, I agree with you, it’s naive to believe that prestige alone is going to land where you want to be. These comments I’ve read are grossly superficial.

thank you edbraga. finally a voice of reason. this is madness, madness i tell you! lol

Can anyone else NOT see the major requirements for the Sociology major at Berkeley?

I keep getting “invalid page,” and it’s ****ing me off.

@karol

sorry if I sound arrogant, but I know far too many people that graduated from colleges that lacked prestige and can’t find a job~ Prestige is a huge factor in employment. It’s why I worked hard at a CCC when I could have just gotten a 3.0 and gone to a run of the mill CSU.

@edbraga

they’re going to look at where you did your undergrad before they look at your cover letter. atleast at Amgen, Amazon, most fortune 100 companies, any IB job… Where my mom works they wont hire kids fresh out of school unless they went to an top ranked school (stanford/ucla/cal) I’m talking california mind you.

once you have work experience this changes a lot. but none the less…

@ edbraga,

Isn’t that what everyone is saying? If there are applicants who happen to have very similar qualifications (ie. work experience, references, awards, interview), a company is much more likely to hire applicants from a prestigious program.
However, if you want to think that the exact same applicant who attended UC Merced has the same chance as one who graduated from Haas, by all means don’t let anyone stop you.

@ciaokarol
I understand that there are those who don’t have the resources to attend more prestigious schools, but that is the reality of our society. And in most cases, students who really do need the money are able to get it through financial aid. Of course there are those who fall into special circumstances and don’t get the help they need, but then again that’s what communism appeals to.

@ BPkid101, that is ridiculous. Going to a certain school is not a make or break deal. I seriously doubt that companies are that careless when hiring.

That’s the crux of my argument. If you’re saying Berkeley has more internships opportunities that helps you get a job, then yeah, I agree with you. Berkeley has a lot a lot of resources than other schools. But everyone is saying the Berkeley’s prestige is going to get you somewhere, and that is misleading. It gives a lot of people a false sense of reassurance that they’re going to get a job just because they’re going to Berkeley.

@ rawfulmao, What is your definition of qualification? Mine is just resume.

Interviews/cover letters/rec letters are completely different things.

Enough of this game of cat/mouse already. The point is, “all other things constant”, people prefer to have a more prestigious name attached to their resume. Whether you’d like to admit it or not, that is how this society works.

Before anyone starts talking about what ifs, please re-read the “…” part.

^ Fine, when it comes down to it, I enjoy the name recognition.

Me too. Plus I noticed your “Berkeley '12” lol.

hear hear, edbraga. jesus, my thread got hijacked

Go to Cal, duh. GO BEARS!
