"Prestigious" enough?

I’m a high school senior applying to IU this fall. If all goes to plan, I will hopefully be accepted into the Hutton Honors College and receive some scholarship money (35 ACT, 4.57 W GPA / 4.0 UW GPA, four year three sport athlete, President of a club and executive board members of a few more, have gotten five 5’s and one 4 on AP tests freshman through junior year). I will pursue a career in law and my absolute dream school would be Georgetown Law. Obviously that is an amazing school and I would have to work extremely hard to get in, but for now, I was wondering if Indiana is considered “prestigious” enough for my undergrad. I really love the school but I just want to make sure attending IU will help me follow my dreams

EDIT: I’m sorry, I definitely should have noted that I want to major in History (possible double major in PoliSci??) so I will not be looking to attend Kelley.

A friend of mine attended Georgetown Law, and he went to a private university ranked outside of the USNWR top 100 national universities for his undergraduate education. As long as you do well on your LSAT and maintain an excellent GPA, your undergraduate school will have little impact on the admissions decision. Ultimately, you should attend an undergraduate school that you think would be a good fit for you and is cost-friendly (save your money for law school). IU is a great school and it will provide you with a strong education, but again, be sure to focus on maintaining a stellar GPA and give yourself adequate time to prepare for the LSAT regardless of where you attend.

Your ACT and GPA should allow you to be directly admitted into the Hutton Honors College.

Congrats on the amazing stats! I don’t know much about law school, but see if you can get your counselor to nominate you for the Wells scholarship. You sound like you have a legitimate chance to get it to me. It’s a full ride

It has been many years ago when I attended IU, but I had a friend who was an accounting major with a 4.0 who got into Georgetown Law School and has done very well as a white collar crime attorney in DC. Also had another IU friend who got into Harvard Law. Someone mentioned Wells Scholars. Have you seen that they announced a new 3+3 program with the IU Law School?

There is no question that if you do well at IU and get a high score on the LSAT, you can get into Georgetown law school. I went to a law school that is generally considered to be more prestigious than Georgetown and there were lots of people there from much less prestigious colleges than IU. (They did well at those colleges, of course). You should go to a college that you think you will enjoy and get a good education at, and that you can afford, and that you think you can do well at. If, several years from now, you still want to go to law school, and you are still interested in Georgetown, the fact that you attended IU rather than a more prestigious college won’t hold you back – assuming you have a good GPA and LSAT score. Or maybe during college you will decide that you are interested in something other than law; keep an open mind.

A trip to Georgetown will convince you to stay in Bloomington :). OK, the Georgetown area is not all that bad, but it’s expensive and I’ll take Mother Bear’s over any G-town fodder. And neither has subway.

Kidding aside, if you want to get some more info about where the pre-law kids go from IU, then the IU pre-med / pre-law / pre-dent office (there is such a thing with an impossible to remember name) should be able to tell you. Also, IU has some very well regarded programs (SPEA for example) and research opportunities that may make you stand out some more.

IU is a top research institution, and provides a lot of resources that will set you up for success. You would be taking classes at the #11 best law school in the nation, among public universities. The faculty here are incredible. You might as well apply, IU is generous with scholarships. (Also, you should consider a minor at Kelley if you’re worried about prestige)

Yes it is. Just do well when you are there. Georgetown Law is not as prestigious as undergrad. Also it’s not in Georgetown.
