Prestigious Rice?

How prestigious Rice across the country?
compared to other top schools like northwestern, brown, u penn, and u chiago etc.?

I would say it is more prestigious than either northwestern or U. chicago. Not by a lot though. In fact u chicago may hold more prestige for those in the know.

the lay man knows Upenn and all but thats not important. All are great ans who needs toknow, will know

i think it depends upon where you live.rice is extremely prestigious in texas, but in the midwest, where im from, not many people have heard of it.

it depends...it will be known in YOUR field which is all that matters.

Rice has more of a regional reputation than some of the other schools you listed. In HI, it's becoming known for its sports teams that sometimes come to HI since it joined the Western Athletic Conference that HI also participates in.
I believe Northwestern & UPenn & UChicago have pretty national reps. While Brown is very well known & regarded in academic circles, I'm honestly not sure how well known/regarded it is to "average folks."

Out here on the East Coast, a lot of people (at least who I talk to) have heard of Rice and know that it's a good school... but that's about it. What I get a lot of is: "It's in Dallas, right?"

I think that prestige is in the eye of the beholder. All I know is that when I was down at Rice for Owl Weekend, I was extremely impressed with the types of students there... people choosing between Stanford, Rice, Princeton, Georgetown, etc. It's a great school and anyone who doubts it needs to do some investigating.

in the northwest, its not very famous either. i get weird looks telling them about rice, and weirder looks once i tell them its in texas... (ppl here usually stick to the west/east coast). anyways, my point was that it doesnt really matter because those that u want to know about rice's prestige, WILL know. (grad schools know!)

i got the same last year, and i still get the same...but as a student at cornell, i got in as a transfer, at least smart students know about it, however, U of Chicago does get more respect than Rice, in my opinion

i think it depends on the field. Rice will be well known in the fields that it excells in by the people that really matter which are ur employers. i really dont care about what the average joe thinks.

thats the spirit.

lol its hard to tell if ur being sarcastic or not...

no i completely agree with you. hmm.. that might sound sarcastic, too. no but really now.

it reminds me of one of feynman's anecdotes. he was asked on a radio station to explain his work which led to his nobel prize in theoretical physics in 60 seconds. so he hurriedly goes through the history, talking about quantum electrodynamics and its peculiarities. things would cancel or quickly go to infinity and nobody could get it right. he had to make this new type of path integral and make these funny diagrams, etc. so it's over everyone's head except for a few people in the world, especially at the time.

then later he took a cab ride in NY and the cabbie says, "feynman, eh? i heard you on the radio trying to explain your prize. man, if i were you, i woulda said, If i could explain how i won a nobel prize in theoretical physics to YOU in less than 60 seconds, then it really isnt worth a nobel prize, now is it??

lesson is, ignore the average joe and follow your own standards. or at the very least follow the standards of people you know are smart ;)

hey man, its funny you mention feynmann. I read the book titled "feymann's rainbow" in which a recent PHD graduate in physics goes there and gets a room by him. He is lost and is not sure what he wants to persue and considers string theory and other things. thanks for feymann he realizes that he is intersted in quantum optics and uses his theory of multiple dimansions to rework the interactions of a laser with the atoms in the crystal lattice. Feymann teaches him not to chase other people's "rainbows" but his own. and to those that plan to live a life based on what other people think...chase ur own rainbow! and build ur own "castes in the sky" putting UR own foundation underneath them.

Internationaly Rice is not that well known. Other universities mentiones in this post such as Uni of Chicago, Penn and Northwestern would be a lot more famous.

But on the other hand people in academia and company heads should know it.
