washu vs. rice - in terms of prestige

which one is more prestigious?

it seems like washu is overrated ?

wash u is DEFINITELY more prestigious

around here (SE MI), most people 1) do not know that Wash. U. even exists, or 2) do not plan on applying there. so it's not overrated at my hs...

so how is it more prestigious if 1. is true?

Coming from Texas, I'd say that Rice is definately more prestigious. It draws oohs and ahhs everytime that its mentioned, but then again, I do live in Houston.

D and her friend who attend WashU and Rice respectively, laugh because they both had to explain where they were going to school to most people. (and still do at the end of their 1st year there). Professionals and those who know more about the college experience and selective schools know both. From personal experience have to say the WashU name gets recognized more. Discussions went 'Where is your D applying?' I'd answer WashU and the reaction was 'WOW - tough school!' and then I'd add that she was also applying to Rice and would usually get 'Where is that? or 'Oh.' and then ".....crickets....". Both girls are loving their experiences at their respective schools, but have to vote for WashU in name recognition.

My feelings are the exact opposite from the above poster. I think Rice has much more name recognition- partly because it is a DI athletic school. WashU brings to mind U of Washington. Both are wonderful schools, of course.

Both are on the same level; any difference in national prestige is very minor.

WashU isnt overrated... I just dont like them at all becaause its kinda cheap... like they waitlist half the country... dont like that at all

I have to agree with Antarius. aznoverachiever may be doing the WUSTL but among students and faculty at top schools Rice U. (in my opinion) is more prestigious.

I agree. Rice is more well-known.

Coming from the East coast, I would say Rice.

Coming from Texas my opinion is skewed, but few people around here have even heard of Wash U.

Rice (10 charac)

You all really need to remember something: While some people have been giving pretty fair analysis on this thread, others base their claims on what people around them know. I live in Arkansas, so people are fairly knowledgable that both Rice and WashU are great schools. But in some places, schools are a lot more well known. So if I live in, say, Missouri, my friends may all know about Wash U and be impressed by it, but maybe never heard of Rice. It would not mean that one was more presitigious than another, it would be impossible for me to tell because I'd only been to two or three areas with opinions.

Now, I acknowledge that some people may have been all over the place, but it's important to remember that one can only know so much about overall prestigigiousness if they hear opinions from one area of the country.

Who cares? They are each good schools and are both prestigious.

coming from Houston, Rice gets tons of oohs and ahhs. Most high schools students here have heard of Wash U only because they get tons of mail from them. My brother tells me his friends on the east coast haven't even heard of Rice before, but I think he's jus jellus.

well, the posters do!

i'd say that wash u is more prestigious based on that wash u has 12% missouri students and rice has 61% texas students, (and texas, while several times the size of missouri in terms of population, is not THAT much bigger)

what i'm saying here is that more qualified students from around the country have heard of wash u and therefore apply there and are accepted compareted to rice, but who knows, maybe rice prefers admitting texans and wash u prefers geographical diversity

July 2005 numbers of population
5,800,310 - Missouri
22,859,968 - Texas

It is easier to get into Rice out of state (40% vs 17% last I heard). So many Texans apply that many get in, but I believe the percentage is more like 50/50 in state/oos. I think Missouri just does not have as many qualified applicants as Texas, which makes sense considing it is quadruple the size.

True, raindrop. Good call.

Rice only has about 45% percent Texans. Besides, Stanford has a similar percentage of California students.

my bad, i was only doing us students with the numbers i got straight from the rice website (but i find it hard to believe rice has 16% international students)
