Pretentiousness on the common app essay

Hi everyone,

I'm a high school senior this year, and I just got started on the wonderful world of college essay writing. I've completed a first and second draft of my common app essay and I think it's going pretty well, but my one concern is that it is too pretentious. I enjoy trying to make my writing as beautiful as possible and I like using anaphora (several sentences starting with the same words/pattern in order to create repetition) and other creative devices. Is this a huge turn-off for admissions people, or is it a good thing in terms of writing well. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Well, from my understanding, the Admissions team is always look for something new - something that would make you stand out amongst the crowd. I feel that your technique is very creative and is sure to grab the attention of the Admissions team. I’m currently attending Cornell university and even though my SAT scores weren’t all to great (2010) I still got accepted probably because I tried something new on my college essays. If you ever need help, feel free to PM me and I’ll help you wherever I can :)

Thanks! :)
