Prevalence of hook-ups at Duke?

Okay, so I visited duke last week with my sibling whose considering duke, and I'm not gonna lie there were some erm..sketchy ''red-flags''..

Within the couple of minutes of being near campus, we saw a bunch of students (like 4 guys and 4 girls) having a synchronized GROUP make-out session in front of a chinese restaurant.. O__o.... that was my first impression of Duke.. so I kind of just laughed and we continued driving..30 secs later, we drive under this bridge where there is loads of grafetti that says.. "At Duke, I will...4/20" I brushed that off too because lots of colleges have weed.. (can u believe this was our first 5 minutes of duke lol?) So when we got there, it was around 11:00 pm and FREEZING cold, yet I was surprised how 70% of the girls were wearing these super tiny minis and just walking around in the dark.. I thought that was odd as well..

so when we got back, I decided to research on Duke, and was SHOCKED to read some stuff written by Duke students..

This quote is straight from Duke Chronicle:

Soo Duke students, is there any truth to this? (my sister is the non-party type of person..and wants to do pre-med, but this hook-up culture at duke sounds trashy..) Does over half the population of student engage in hook ups? Please give me your honest UNBIASED answer..

This sounds wildly exaggerated to me. I sure there are plenty of kids that hook up and those that do not.
I am sure that they are like kids from any other school, or most schools.
Maybe your sister should consider becoming a nun!
My daughter is a senior@Duke…

If you hang out with the good crowd, you don’t fall into those things You’ll be exposed to sex/drugs/etc throughout the years, but whether or not it happens to your sister is entirely up to her. Kids hook up at Duke just like in any school. Some do it less, some do it more. It all depends where you are and who you ask.

Hope this helps, ish

It sounds like that 60% figure is for all college students across the country, not specifically Duke students. Also, in these studies, oftentimes “hook up” isn’t clearly defined and is simply seen as makeout with somebody or more. It’s not just sex. So, yeah, saying 60% of college-aged people kissed somebody who they weren’t necessarily boyfriend/girlfriend with doesn’t sound that crazy. No, most Duke students don’t sleep around.

Provocative use of the subject line, though…

Duke has a lot of available statistics about this. The most recent and important is the Duke Social Relationships Project, which reported the following:

[ul][]Women: 36.5% were dating (average length: 16 months), 28.3% had not hooked up in the past 6 months, 35.2% had hooked up in the past 6 months
[]Men: 34.5% were dating (average length: 15 months), 30.5% had not hooked up in the past 6 months, 35% had hooked up in the past 6 months
[]Of the women who hooked up at least once, women reported an average of 3.42 partners and 4.38 hook ups
[]Of the men who hooked up at least once, men reported an average of 3.77 partners and 4.80 hook ups[/ul]
So, there you go. About 65% of men and women are either dating or not hooking up. Of the 1/3 of the student body that hooks up, they have an average of about 1 hook up every 5.5-6 weeks. Keep in mind that a “hook up” for the purposes of this study was everything from making out to sex.

Another source of information is the National College Health Assessment, run by the American College Health Association. Although the only available report is a few years old, its data is still pretty useful. Its findings for the past year:

[ul][]33% of Duke students had no sexual partners
[]47% had one sexual partner
[]10% had two sexual partners
[]10% had three or more sexual partners[/ul]

Finally, there’s the study done by a pair of Duke sociology professors. Their findings:

[ul][]Freshmen: 35% hooked up, 20% were dating, and 45% did neither
[]Seniors: 30% hooked up, 43% were dating, and 27% did neither[/ul]
As with the DSRP, “hooking up” here is anything from making out to sex.

This is not something that is unique to Duke. Also, you should have toned down the sensationalism in the title.

I’ll get my $.02 and say that the hook-up culture isn’t a Duke phenomenon or even particularly conspicuous at Duke. It’s become more of a generational phenomenon.

There are also some very interesting views out there regarding the hook-up culture and its relationship to modern feminism (ie. Hanna Rosin’s piece in The Atlantic) and some new books about its effects on our generation (ie. Donna Frietas’s book). People may not agree with these views, but the hook-up culture has obviously become widespread enough that people are sitting up and taking notice.

You forgot the Steve Aoki threesome.

^HA! I knew someone would mention this.

^ and ^^

hmm? What’s the story there? I was at LDOC and must have missed that.

Look it up on barstool

It wasn’t a threesome. It was just one freshman girl in PiPhi.
