Princeton Class or 2021 EA / RD Application thread

@gmanhax how do you know that your supplement was viewed?

@Above He submitted a semi-private youtube link so he could monitor when the view count rose.

@Jzaldarriags ^^ what he said.

Just some observations/ancecdotal info here. Everyone is assuming b/c the date has yet to be released that means we will be late. UPenn released their date today and it’s earlier than everyone else (by several days) so I don’t think we can assume that.

Also, not for nothing, when I interviewed my interviewer told me that applicants for SCEA were way down this year in his region (he was the alumni interview coordinator for the region). He had no idea about the overall SCEA applicant pool but he told me that in his opinion the acceptance rate has gotten so low that the law of diminishing returns has kicked in and people have become discouraged to apply to a place with a 6% acceptance rate.

What region would that be, if I may ask?

Southwest PA

@zaxm12 But the SCEA acceptance rate for Princeton is quite high — so why would people be discouraged to apply early? I can see why they would be discouraged to apply regular, but just going by statistics, it’s hard to see why that would be the reason for SCEA.

I understand. I can only report what he said. That was his reasoning behind why applicants would be down (at least in the region).

@zaxm12 Hmm. I’m pretty close to you! Weird that applicants are down this year… let’s hope it works to our advantage

Not that it’s worth much, but this Princeton thread is also a lot less active than those of other ivies (Yale, Harvard, Cornell, Penn), which may indicate less interest in the school this year. Can’t believe that in less than 10 days we will know our decisions!

I think one reason why applications could be down on a more trans regional scale is that Yale and Harvard both have definitive pull factors for SCEA this year. Harvard has Malia Obama (and a glance at the Harvard thread will, indeed, confirm that there are some who are applying for her sake), and Yale has new dorms/potentially higher acceptance rate (Yale’s increase has already been reported at 9%). After Princetons numbers jumped this past year for SCEA, it seems like many applicants who are looking for the best “deal” per say are not applying early to Princeton, causing stagnation or an application drop. This is just a theory though; does anyone have any other anecdotes to support lower application numbers?

Oh look what I started =O

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just my region and not the whole country so lets just temper the discussion with that notion in mind.

Also, if the decision date is late this year, that’s just more evidence of an expansion of the applicant pool.

I don’t know, @blckdrve brings up some pretty interesting points, especially about Yale. At my school, which is a private school that sends over 15% of its graduating class to Ivies every year, there is certainly lots of buzz about Yale’s new dorms, and there are less people applying to Princeton SCEA than in past years. Then again, small sample size, so take this info with a grain of salt.

@gmanhax you and I are on the same page. I just don’t want to start an uproar with anecdotal evidence if you know what I mean.

@zaxm12 Gotcha. Princeton’s admission is going to be super selective regardless of what happens at Y or H. Though it’s fun to speculate, all we can really do is wait…

I am an international applicant from Latin America and I believe I am the only one applying from my country after what my alumni interviewer said. Hopefully the number of applicants this year has decreased, fingers crossed

@blckdrve - I have not been able to find any / many posts in the Harvard EA thread re: applying due to Malia Obama. Where did you see that?

@oplurobha pardon me for asking but which country?

@MedSciBud See page 39. Looking back, I don’t see as many as I remember. Perhaps I’m remembering a few of my friends mentioning it. I do however know a surprisingly high number of people who her attending for 2017 played a factor in their EA choice. I honestly don’t think it will cause any major change in application numbers, but maybe a slight one. Yale’s increase seems to be more substantial.

I think that it is really hard to say if interest in Princeton is dwindling. I go to a public school in the Midwest and nine kids from my school applied EA. My school is a small, well-ranked public high school, but only one or two kids, if that, go to Ivy Leagues each year. I live in a mainly middle-class area, so students at my school look for solid scholarship opportunities, rather than chance victories like Princeton. Considering this information and the low number of applicants from my school in previous years, it is very odd that so many students have applied. Keep in mind, this is not even regular decision!

In short, at least in my community, more kids are taking chances and applying to Princeton than ever before. So, it is really hard to make a sound speculation based on one piece of data. Interesting information though! Thanks for sharing!

I found information about Princeton applicants from my school through the Scattergrams function on my Naviance portal.
