Princeton + Econ + sophomore + bad gpa + minority = ?

I'm a sophomore at Princeton who had a terrible first year GPA: approximately a 2.9. I'm of hispanic descent, speak fluent spanish, and have little extra-curricular activity. My sophomore year is going better, i have around a 3.3. I consider myself a people person and a strong interviewer.

Do I stand a chance at a top 25 Investment Bank? I would prefer a BB bank (DB, barclays, credit suisse would be a dream) but am interested in boutiques as well. I know VERY little about the whole process, and was wondering if anyone had any advice? What internships are there for sophomores, especially minority ones? Also, if I manage to get an interview through networking, does GPA not matter anymore at that point? Anything else that comes to mind would be very helpful!

Thanks so much in advance!

Ever notice that the job postings have a minimum GPA? If it falls under try cold calling/cold emailing from your schools alumni list. By the time you get past the first round interview it’s mostly fit questions and dumb little teasers like “how many oranges does the United States consume in 32 days?”. Of course this depends on firm/location/division.

Just work at wherever that will give you a job offer, I mean think about it, our economy has gone down the toilet and people are having an extremely hard time to hunt for a job. So I would suggest to take a job at wherever you can get a job at any firm. It doesn’t have to be in Los Angeles or New York either.

what’s funny is that i have a 3.92 at UF, yet people would still choose you over me becuase you go to princeton

Go on the website for the particular place where you want to intern. Look up “minority recruitment” or “diversity days” or something similar. Each bank calls it a different thing. Apply. They either won’t care about your GPA, or will have a much lower one in the requirements. The fact that you’re at Princeton will give it the extra push. Enjoy your internship.

Have you joined an eating club yet?

After you have many of your upperclassmen within that club will be able to help you. If you decide not to bicker, pick Colonial, more econ majors in that one than all the others.

Side note: as an executive officer within said clubs you can elect to live within the club and you will receive a *special" sticker on your prox allowing entry into the other clubs. Now that will allow for further networking, BIG time.

You still have time to increase your GPA. Study your heart out. Everything counts unless your father owns the investment bank. It is still very respectable if your GPA is >3.3 after your jr. year. Good luck.
