Princeton Psychology&English

Princeton is my dream school and I want to double major in English and psych. I plan on calling the departments at some points, but I have a bit of phone anxiety, so I'm putting that off until I'm a junior.

That said, does anyone on here happen to have knowledge or thoughts on Princeton's English and psych departments?

Both are strong depts., both ranked #1 in NRC grad dept. rankings.

I don’t believe you are allowed to double major at Princeton.

…what. Can you tell me where you’ve found this information?

[Major Choices - Office of the Dean of the College](Choosing a Major | Office of the Dean of the College)

“Each year a number of students find it difficult to choose among departments when asked to pick a major … An often-sought remedy for this dilemma is what other schools call a “double major.” For Princeton students, however, a double major is not an option. While you can certainly pursue your interests outside the major and may even complete the requirements for a concentration in more than one department, your degree and departmental honors are granted in one department only.”

This information is littered all over the site in various forms: [Princeton University - Departments & Programs](Areas of Study | Princeton University)

I was a psych major in '09. The department is great. It’s really easy to get involved hands-on in research with professors.

There aren’t double-majors exactly at Princeton but you can get a certificate along with your major. For instance one of my friends majored in Psychology with a certificate in American History. Another did Spanish with a certificate in Politics (or other way around? I forget.) Getting a certificate has its own set of requirements like a double major would, and I believe that you do some of your Junior and Senior independent work in the field of your certificate.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hmmm. That sounds wonderful. I’m not really looking for the prestige of double-majoring. I just want to work on both psych and English in college because I adore them.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the thoughts. I’d love to hear any others.

Not all majors, however, offer certificates (and vice-versa–not all certificates have corresponding majors).

Do writing and psych have certificates?

There is a creative writing certificate, but no psych one, as far as I can tell. There is a neuroscience certificate.

[Princeton University - Certificate Programs](Areas of Study | Princeton University)

If what you are interested in is creative writing, Princeton has the most awesome, star-studded faculty roster anywhere, and they actually have a great reputation for teaching undergraduates. The writing program is one of Princeton’s real jewels.
