Doesn't matter to me, but I thought this part was amusing:

Princeton's board of trustees approved the increases during a closed-door meeting during Saturday's snowstorm.

Princeton raises tuition, financial aid

The total cost of attending Princeton University will top $40,000 next fall under a new tuition plan approved by the school's board.

Students will pay 5 percent more in tuition during the 2005-06 school year, slightly more than last year's 4.5 percent increase, Princeton officials said.

Undergraduates will be charged $31,450 in tuition, $4,610 for a room and $4,153 for meals, according to the plan. Graduate students will face similar hikes.

Yeah. I'm pretty poor by US standards and I don't really grasp these big numbers. After a point it doesn't matter*. I hardly know tuition figures for the schools I've applied to, only the finaid situation.

That's about the cost of attendance THIS year at DS's university. I'm sure they will have an increase also. Cost of attendence this year exceeded $41000.

It will continue to increase until the subsidy for those who could pay the full freight ($65k) is eliminated. It wouldn't hurt them much if they did it all in one fell swoop, but instead the institutions continually leapfrog over each other.

The total cost is closer to $43k than $40k.

They were expecting the increase to be approved because this is the breakdown of the expenses they gave us in our ED acceptance package, dated December 10, 2004.
