Princeton Waitlist 2017

Sigh, double post.

As you can tell I’m really freaking out here and will latch onto any tiny sliver of hope…Greenrose, I hope your calculations are accurate and turn out to be the reality of the things…

Wait. Wait. Wait. If summer melt is a real phenomenon, does that mean it would be risky to SIR to Berkeley? Their academic calendar for fall starts in August instead of September…

Can I SIR to two schools? UC Berkeley and USC?

So, I’m just wondering… IF by any chance you get off the waitlist, does the admissions office contact you through email or phone? What happens to the international applicant?

Any idea when we’d find out about when you get off the waitlist if such a thing would ever happen?

My D got accepted off the WL. She got a phone call in late May or early June, I believe.

Good luck to you all.

Hey um, just a few questions. I’ve searched around a bit already, but more info can’t hurt: is there anything in particular one should send, and if so, where should we send them? ^^

I’ve heard that you can send a statement of intent (i.e. this is my first choice), as well as any updates. So basically, are there any general guidelines to this (typed in an email vs attached word doc, length, etc) and how do we convey these materials to the university?

It sounds obvious, but as far as I know Princeton doesn’t have an official system for sending materials. So I’m not even sure about the little things, like what to put in the subject header, where to send it, and how much identifying info to provide.

Thanks in advance! I was a little bit rambling with that, sorry!

Does anyone know if Princeton will initially try to fulfill quotas for location on the WL similar to how they choose students in RD? I am a waitlisted applicant from NJ and there are other friends of mine who were waitlisted in CA. To my knowledge, those two states are where Princeton pulls from most. So, at this stage in the game, does location have anything to do with being pulled from the waitlist (assuming they do grab some applicants off of the list this year) ? Secondly, does the HS where you are applying from have anything to do with your odds on the WL? There is one student from my school who was accepted to Princeton this year, and thankfully for us, he has chosen to attend Harvard instead and will not matriculate. That’s one more spot open for us!

@mrscollege, I’ve seen quite a few of your posts around and I’d just like to say thank you very much for your always helpful input and words of encouragement to all of us and the classes before us at this very stressful time. The outcome of your D’s situation gives us hope.

Best of luck to all of you.

Here are two helpful CC links for waitlist information:

My D sent her letter of intent to remain on the WL to the address on the Common App. She simply addressed it to “Admissions.” The letter will get to the appropriate admissions officer.

@ OREngineer, no you cannot send in two SIRs as far as I know. But you must send in ONE SIR to a school and pay the fee. Then if you get into another school off the WL, you lose that fee.

@Phantasmata. Thanks. BTW, my D and a friend of hers both got into Princeton off the WL and they are both from CA.

Wow, thank you so much mrscollege :)

Hm, (yet) another question: if we do send any updates, is it better to do it ASAPly, or wait until we have some more significant things to report? Obviously the card we should send back in a timely manner, but I wonder how soon we should send updates/ letters.

Good luck to everyone! I really hope they end up taking a bunch of people off the waitlist. >_<

I think in addition to the postcard, you should send a letter ASAP stressing that Pton is your number one plus any accomplishments you have right now. It’s important to get on their radar now. Then it’s probably not a bad idea to send a second strategically timed letter in early May reiterating your passion for P as well as listing any extra honors if u have any more.

Btw I’m not sure additional accomplishments are as important as passion for the school at this point (although they certainly can’t hurt). You’ve already proven to be accomplished and worthy by making the WL in my opinion.

Again good luck!

So we can make a deposit, accept school A’s offer, and still remain on the waitlist by May 1? And say we do get accepted between May and June. We can politely tell school A “no thanks” and commit to Princeton with only the loss of the deposit fee?

It seems like almost a jerk move, but then again, this is Princeton. Hmm…

@mrscollege: Gotcha! Unfortunately I don’t think I’ve actually received any honors since submitting the app, but it can’t hurt to send a letter off first I suppose.

@randomazn14: Yeah, pretty much. You will basically just lose the deposit. Don’t feel bad about it, though. As far as I know, colleges are used to seeing this happen so you need not worry.

Correct. It’s just how the WL is done everywhere. I’ve heard of kids getting off the WL as late as July even after they’ve gotten their dorm assignment somewhere else.

It’s part of whats called Summer Melt.

A bit early, but where will you guys deposit? I’ll be depositing in Penn and I’m very happy  of course I’ll remain on the waiting list because well it’s another shot. Princeton has been …tiring for me : deferred then wait list

Would it be possible to increase the odds of getting off if one where to send in an extra recommendation letter from an alumni? I know that Princeton said that extra letters weren’t necessary, but I thought maybe it might help.

Thoughts?

Hardcopy letter, or email letter?

@phantasmata, I can’t see why that would hurt. I think it’s a good idea.

@OREngineer, my D sent a hard copy snail mail letter but she might have also sent it email. So…why not both? :)

Sounds like an apt idea.

So I got the letter today and it stated that they do not want you to “ask for more letters of recommendation.”

I already have an additional letter of rec from a teacher who knows me very well for the Gates Millennium Scholarship. This letter is really quite amazing – speaks to how I’m one of the best math students she’s ever come into contact with, speaks about the struggles that I’ve overcome – it is a really personal and strong letter.

Should I still send it? If yes, how? Do I send it or does my counselor need to send it on behalf of the teacher? Does the teacher email them?

^ O____O…it says 1364 enrolled, contrary to GreenRose’s numbers…I am perplexed now…
